It looks like the classic 1911-pattern pistol is going to be around forever, in lineups of pricey manufacturers and more budget-oriented outfits alike. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be any changes along the way, and Iver Johnson proves that with its new lineup of Gen 2 pistols. The changes also carry over to their pistol-caliber carbine.

Iver Johnson oddities @ TFB:

Gen 2 upgrades

If you look through the specs on the Gen 2 pistols that Iver Johnson is selling, there are obviously some major differences at the skin-deep level. Some pistols have a colorful finish, others have a gold-plated look and so on.

Along with more traditionally-styled pistols, Iver Johnson has blinged-out versions. [Zac K.]

But they all share some similarities, starting with upgraded sights (brass bead on some pistols, fiber-optic front bead on a couple of others, and an adjustable Novak rear sight). They all have custom rear slide serrations (some have front slide serrations too) for a better grip, along with ambidextrous thumb safety, beavertail grip safety, a crowned barrel, flared ejection port and monoblock trigger bow and shoe, made from the same piece of metal for better durability.

They aren’t 2011-pattern guns; they only ship with 8-round magazines. [Zac K.]

They all have standard 1911-pattern mags, though—none of this new double-stacked business going on, you’ve got to make do with eight rounds (the guns ship with two mags).

Prices vary wildly, from well under $1,000 to more than $2,000. See more info here.

Carbine time

Iver Johnson also sells a pistol-caliber carbine based off their 1911-pattern handguns. They had this back on the wall at their SHOT Show booth, with the same updates the Gen 2 pistols got.

There’s no question that this is different, but it’s a very familiar action. [Zac K.]

Asking price for this oddball rifle is $928; see more info here.

Note that the carbine gets the same basic practical upgrades as the standard pistols. [Zac K.]

New shotguns

Along with blonde-stocked additions to their double gun line, Iver Johnson also had a wall of new revolving .410 shotguns on display.

Interesting-looking blonde wood on the IJ600 over-under shotguns. [Zac K.]

Obviously they’re imported; similar shotguns have been circulating around SHOT for a while now, brought by Turkish manufacturers.

That gas shield at front of the cylinder is supposed to keep you from injury. Zac K.]
Surprisingly, the tac’d-out .410 revolving shotgun costs little more than the standard model.

The .410 shotguns have a shield in front of the cylinder that is supposed to stop the shooter from being injured by gasses escaping from the cylinder gap. Iver Johnson offers these .410 shotguns in a familiar, traditional look, as well as in tactical versions. Prices start at $601, running to $676 for the most expensive models as of SHOT Show 2026. I put a lot of doves and squirrels in the freezer as a kid with a Stevens single shot .410... but I think I might not have if I'd been using these.

The first handgun I qualified with was a 1911. It has a sentimental attraction. I have a desire for the the carbine. But the barrel needs a muzzle device or threads. It is completely impractical. Regardless, I want one. Will most likely have the barrel threaded later.
