Frost in the air and pressure in the chest, instructors from the 40th Home Guard Battalion under Sweden’s Western Military Region recently conducted two intensive winter days of refresher training ahead of the upcoming training cycle. Operating in snow-covered terrain, the focus was on maintaining proficiency across weapon systems while adapting to evolving sighting technologies.

Among the platforms in use was the KSP 58, the Swedish designation for the FN MAG produced by FN Herstal, run both with iron sights and equipped with optics from Aimpoint. Shooters were also seen running the Ak 4C fitted with a modern stock system from Spuhr.

Perhaps the most notable addition was the integration of Leonardo thermal sight, called IRV22, an increasingly common capability even at the Home Guard level. Training covered everything from target designation and loader duties to precision fire, reinforcing both individual marksmanship and crew-served coordination in demanding winter conditions.
