POTD: HK MP5SD3 Machine Gun with Integral Suppressor
Today’s Photo of the Day shows a rare, fully transferable HK MP5SD3 machine gun complete with its original integral suppressor. Offered by Morphy Auctions, this 1984-produced example carries the “IE” proof code and is marked “Made in W. Germany / HK Chantilly, VA,” a sign of its factory-original heritage and importation history.
Chambered in 9×19 mm Parabellum, the MP5SD3 uses a 5.73-inch (146 mm) ported barrel and an aluminum suppressor design that allows standard 9 mm rounds to reliably stay subsonic when fired.
The retractable stock, classic roller-delayed blowback action, and the “S.E.F.” trigger group complete the configuration originally developed for suppressed submachine roles. I usually don’t get too excited about trigger groups, but this is an exception.
If you haven’t seen an H&K MP5 from below, you have now.
And the top view.
Included with this lot were four original HK-marked magazines, one 20-round magazine, a three-cell pouch, original fixed stock, and the HK sight adjustment, too, a full collectible package. According to the auction house, the item is unrestricted and fully transferable under current U.S. regulations.
For collectors and full-auto enthusiasts, this MP5SD3 stands as a near-pristine example of one of modern small arms history’s most iconic suppressed machine guns. This is a classic that remains as relevant today as when it first quietly slipped into service, something that can’t be said about a lot of firearms.
