Weatherby Model 307 Cuts Barrel to 16 Inches for 7mm Backcountry

Weatherby continues to expand its modern bolt-action lineup with the Model 307 Alpine MDT SB, a compact, purpose-built rifle that puts portability and efficiency front and center. Built on Weatherby’s newest bolt-action platform, the Model 307, the Alpine MDT SB is designed to complement the company’s legacy Mark V and Vanguard rifles while embracing the modularity and suppressor-ready trends of today’s hunting and precision markets.

One of the defining features of this configuration is its 16-inch barrel, making it Weatherby’s shortest barrel offering to date. The reduced barrel length is paired specifically with Federal Premium’s 7mm Backcountry ammunition, a cartridge engineered to deliver efficient velocity and terminal performance from shorter barrels.

This pairing allows the Alpine MDT SB to remain compact and maneuverable without giving up downrange capability, making it well-suited for backcountry hunts, steep terrain, and confined shooting environments.

The rifle is built around the Model 307’s two-lug, fully cylindrical action, which is designed for compatibility with a wide range of aftermarket triggers, stocks, scope rails, mounts, and detachable box magazines. That flexibility allows shooters to configure the rifle to match their individual needs while staying within established industry standards.

Weatherby teamed up with MDT to house the action in the MDT HNT26 carbon fiber chassis system. The chassis features a foldable buttstock that, when folded, reduces overall length by more than nine inches, further enhancing portability during transport or in the field.

A fluted barrel and Graphite Black Cerakote finish across the barrel, receiver, bolt, and controls complete the rifle’s design.

With an MSRP of $3,249, the Model 307 Alpine MDT SB is aimed squarely at hunters and shooters looking for a compact, modern rifle optimized around short-barrel performance and contemporary cartridge design.
