Stay Strapped In Bear Country With Liberty Ammunition's Latest Recipe
It’s fall, and that means it’s hunting season. Hunting season might mean it’s bow hunting season where you live, and maybe you want to carry some extra protection if you live in bear country. Or maybe you aren’t a hunter, but you still want to carry a pistol for bear protection when you’re out in the woods, because a rifle or shotgun is hardly convenient. Good news—Liberty Ammunition has your back with their new Bear Country lineup.

Pistol-packin’ firepower
Traditionally speaking, a lot of people toted a big, heavy revolver for backcountry bear protection because that was the only way they felt they could get sufficient firepower in a small package.
There’s a lot to be said for that viewpoint, but over the past few years, we’ve seen 10mm become very popular for bear protection, and some ammo manufacturers are even exploring the capability of 9mm handguns. With their new lineup, Liberty Ammunition hits both targets. Here’s how they describe their two new offerings:
Featuring a hard 100% copper projectile, Bear Country 9mm hits with a whopping 518 ft lbs of stopping power while the 10mm hits with 685 ft lbs.
That far exceeds the competition.
In addition, the custom copper projectile also smashes through bone, unlike lead that mushrooms when it strikes something hard.
Maybe you’d still prefer to strap on a .44 Magnum—or even bigger—because you know when something big and scary wants to eat you, you want all the advantage you can get. But for many of us who can’t afford to stock an arsenal for an endless scenario of what-ifs, Liberty’s new offerings allow a shooter to use the handgun they already own for bear protection.
Gary Ramey, big boss at Liberty, said the new ammo is designed specifically to penetrate through the fat on a fall bear, still getting a kill despite the layer of winter nutrition they pack on late-season: “We bust through bone as opposed to lead projectiles that smush when they strike a hard material (like bone). You don’t want a bullet that behaves like bubblegum when facing down a grizzly.”

I think 10mm is so popular, because an off the shelf 200gr bullet in the 1250fps range is about 690ft lbs of energy. If you don’t reload that's decent protection. Even the 270gr @ 1050fps is 30ft lbs behind it at 660ft lbs of energy.
Same can be said for 44mag popularity an off the shelf 240gr @ 1250fps is about 830ft lbs. I'm not into the muzzle flip of 10mm or the ear-splitting blast of 44mag.
I've found a nice compromise in 45lc 230gr hardcast RNFP @ 1250fps for 798ft lbs of energy. A stout load yes but less recoil and blast than factory 10mm or 44mag.
