Silent Steel Surprised To See Its Suppressors In Battlefield 6

When the first-person shooter video game Battlefield 6 launched earlier this month, players noticed something unexpected: firearm accessories from a European manufacturer appearing in the game. The company, Silent Steel, says it had no idea its products were included until some fans started pointing them out online.

Battlefield 6, by Battlefield Studios / EA, and its single-player campaign follows "Dagger 13", a US Marine Raiders squad, and the story involves a collapsing NATO and a private military company called Pax Armata trying to fill a global power vacuum. There is also a multiplayer mode.

Silent Steel designs products for law enforcement, the military and also for the civilian market. With extensive input on R&D, Silent Steel has introduced several new products over the years.

Among the gear found in the game are the Silent Steel Compact Streamer suppressor, but also their QD Muzzle Brake, and the QD 5-Prong Flash Hider. If you’re a daily or even a weekly reader of TFB, you should be able to recognize the distinctive design of the products.

“We were completely taken by surprise,” says Harri Sjögren, CEO of Silent Steel. “It’s rare for a Finnish manufacturer like us to be noticed at this level, and it’s amazing that our products were chosen for such a massive, global game. It’s both unexpected and a huge compliment.”

Battlefield 6 has already become one of the most successful first-person shooters of the year. For a specialized company like Silent Steel, this kind of unplanned digital exposure could mean a major boost in awareness and business. In the game, the suppressor keeps you hidden during flanking maneuvers and makes you less visible to enemies who are paying attention to visual and audio cues.

“Our products are known for precision engineering and distinct design, but we’ve never imagined they’d show up in a video game,” Sjögren says. “It’s the kind of moment that could open doors, from new distributors to new markets.”

Over 90 percent of Silent Steel’s production is exported, and it already operates a licensed manufacturing partner in the United States. Thanks to Battlefield 6, Silent Steel’s products have now reached an entirely new audience. Most computer gamers probably don’t have the permits needed to purchase either real firearms or suppressors, but brand awareness.

I see some similarities to when RUF Automobile - a German high-performance car manufacturer and Porsche specialist - appeared in several Gran Turismo titles, mainly as stand-ins for Porsche before Sony secured Porsche’s official license. Ruf became very well known and got a whole new fan club overnight.

Do you play Battlefield 6 yet? How do you like it? Did you find any other interesting firearms, optics or accessories?

This seems like a, uh, open and shut trademark infringement case? You are actually required to license trademarked products before using them in AAA vidya games.
