Recoil Control with Minimal Weight - The MDT Titanium Hunting Brake
MDT Sporting Goods has introduced the MDT Titanium Hunting Brake, a lightweight muzzle brake designed for precision hunting rifles and competition use in formats such as NRL Hunter. The brake is intended to provide significant recoil reduction while keeping overall rifle weight to a minimum. Machined from Ti-6Al-4V titanium, the unit weighs approximately 1.7 ounces (about 48 grams), placing it among the lighter options in its category. The four-port layout uses angled ports to counter recoil and muzzle rise, helping shooters maintain sight picture and observe impacts.
MDT Sporting Goods @ TFB:
The MDT Titanium Hunting Brake is available in two models:
- Standard Titanium Hunting Brake – optimized for .30 caliber and under rifles up to .300 PRC with 5/8-24 threads.
- Magnum Titanium Hunting Brake – designed for .300 PRC and larger .30 caliber or .338 caliber rifles, also featuring 5/8-24 threads.
Both versions cost $229.99 and are available here: https://mdttac.com/us/mdt-hunt-brake
The Titanium Hunting Brake features a self-timing lock nut that allows for tool-free installation and removal. A leveling flat machined into the underside assists with precise alignment during installation to achieve consistent orientation and appearance.
MDT states that the design combines effective recoil control with minimal added mass, and it’s pretty incredible that something so light can make such a big difference (there’s a video comparing shooting with and without on MDT’s product page if you scroll down).
Each brake measures 2.48 inches long and 0.98 inches in diameter and features a raw-blasted titanium finish intended to match the aesthetic of precision hunting rifles. Suited for backcountry hunting or field competition, helping shooters stay accurate while keeping rifles light and maneuverable.
From time to time, I see beginners (or even semi-pros) turn up at weekly PRS/precision training sessions with their regular hunting rifles to see how far they can push their system. I love it, and it’s incredible how well some of those setups can perform - and even out-compete - full-grown PRS rifles. I like sleepers like that.
