Photos like this are the coolest and perfect for any Photo Of The Day. The image is from the Swedish Armed Forces CBRN School, and we see one of their experts equipped with the new Ak 24 standard issue firearm and the Pistol 88 sidearm, otherwise known as the Glock 17. The gas mask is designated FM54.

The device this solder is using is a C-detection instrument called AP2C. It is a handheld device for detecting chemical warfare agents. It is designed to detect phosphorus (found in, for example, nerve agents) and sulfur contaminants (found in, for example, mustard gas) in gas or liquid form. A separate surface sampler for liquid sampling is included in the kit.

This type of detection device is in service with the French, Israeli and Australian military forces, civil defence agencies, and US federal government agencies.

To learn more about the Ak24, check out TFB’s detailed summary.

That is the floppiest holster to pistol belt connection I have ever seen. While I'm at it, that guy's outfit and equipment shows no sign of wear or tear--hallmark of a force that rarely if ever trains in the field. Maybe it's just a glamour shot for PR but, my money is on those personnel never having been in the field and so never validated how they carry equipment or whether they can operate the equipment in field conditions. Back to Larteguy's idea of having a pretty army for show and another for the actual business of war.
