[SHOT 2026] FN SCAR Series - Legacy Support & New Model Updates
We covered the new FN SCAR lineup extensively back in September when we had dedicated range time with each variant at a private media only range day. Those hands-on experiences resulted in detailed articles that you can find here:
- First Look: New FN 309 MRD – FN's Everyman Handgun
- First Look: Next Generation FN SCAR – Two Dozen Upgrades, Same Price
- First Look: FN QD556 & QD762 - Purpose-Built SCAR Suppressors
This booth visit at SHOT Show 2026 gave us a chance to catch up with FN about some important updates regarding legacy SCAR support and clarify a few details that existing and potential owners need to know.
First and most important for legacy SCAR owners: FN is committed to supporting the old platform with backwards compatible accessories and parts. This includes the newer trigger assemblies and bolt carrier groups since they were specifically designed to work with legacy SCARs from the get-go. FN made it clear they don't want to burn bridges or alienate existing owners who invested in the original platform. If you own a legacy SCAR, you're not being left behind.
On the warranty front, FN confirmed that suppressors will not void warranties on the new SCAR models regardless of whose can you run. This applies to any manufacturer's suppressor, not just FN's own QD556 and QD762 offerings, though I am sure its recommended to use their product that were engineered with the SCAR in mind. That's a solid move considering how many SCAR owners want to run these rifles suppressed.
Weight differences between legacy and new models vary by platform:
- SCAR 16S: Slightly heavier than legacy version
- SCAR 17S: Slightly heavier than legacy version
- SCAR 20S: Lighter than legacy 20S
The new models ship with Magpul MBUS Pro backup sights instead of the classic SCAR folding irons. FN heard the feedback and disappointment (and not just from me) about ditching the original sights, so this may change down the line. We specifically mentioned that choice during our September range session, and apparently, we weren't alone.
The 2026 SCAR lineup features 25+ upgrades including a hydraulically buffered bolt carrier that reduces felt recoil. Here's the current model breakdown:

How about just make magazines available? SCAR17 mags have been nonexistent for months now. There's no good justification for that, IMHO.
