Truck Guns, Part 2: The Stoner Legacy

When it comes to mobile firepower, few tools have stood the test of time like the AR-15. In the wake of the Global War on Terror (GWOT), the concept of the “truck gun” evolved out of necessity. Military personnel and security contractors required weapons that offered both close-quarters agility and extended-range efficiency — a tall order for any firearm. The legendary AR-15 is the platform that has not only met these challenges but exceeded them. Eugene Stoner would be proud.
The King of Modularity
Since the 1960s, the AR-15 has cemented its role as the go-to rifle in the U.S. and beyond. At this point, not knowing the AR is like not knowing what brisket is at a Texas tailgate — it’s everywhere, and for good reason. Its unmatched modularity, ergonomics, and reliability have made it the king of the hill in modern rifle design.
If there’s one quirk to note, it’s the fixed buffer system, which traditionally prevented folding stocks. But thanks to advancements like LAW Tactical and Dead Foot Arms, this obstacle has been creatively addressed.
Built to Adapt: Semper Gumby
Historically, the AR’s buffer system limited its suitability in tight quarters. For truck guns and PDWs (personal defense weapons), overall length is everything. However, folding mechanisms and redesigned internals have breathed new life into the AR, eliminating the idea that it's stuck in the past.
From Palmetto State Armory and SIG Sauer to CZ and IWI, today’s manufacturers offer folding or telescoping stock systems that retain the AR’s familiar magazines and 5.56 round, while making them far more compact. With such an abundance of options, building the ideal truck gun is now more about preference and budget than platform limitations.
And yes, there are tactical situations where the rifle may need to be stored in a trunk rather than inside the vehicle cabin. Folding stock systems help solve this by allowing quick deployment and improved manoeuvrability inside cramped spaces. When space is tight and speed is everything, a well-configured AR with a folding or collapsible stock shines.
Optics & Sight Picture: Know Your Setup
The AR platform’s upper receiver and handguard allow for a wide range of optics configurations, but what’s optimal? Some prefer a low-mount setup to keep the sight axis close to the bore, while others opt for taller mounts that provide a “heads-up” sight picture and greater situational awareness.
Both have tradeoffs. A low mount offers minimal deviation and better recoil management, but can force an awkward shooting posture. A high mount allows quicker sight acquisition and better peripheral vision, but requires precise knowledge of holdovers due to increased sight height over bore.
Pro tip: If you're running a high-mount setup, try the “jaw weld” — a cheekbone-to-stock point of reference that replaces traditional cheek welds without compromising stability.
Personalized Grip & Handguard Selection
One of the AR-15’s greatest advantages is its compatibility with a nearly endless range of aftermarket parts. Choosing the right grip and handguard isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s about function, comfort, and real-world performance.
When it comes to handguards, rigidity and modularity are key. Midwest Industries offers top-tier options, while Unique ARs provides functional rails with a bit more artistic flair. As for grips, a more vertical (90-degree) angle is ideal for upright shooting positions — the kind you’ll most likely be in when deploying a truck gun in an urban environment. Your wrists will thank you.
All Gucci’d Up: Accessory Real Estate
No rifle platform offers more mounting real estate than the AR. From night vision and IR lasers to foregrips and bipods — if you can imagine it, someone’s made it (yes, even a Chick-fil-A sauce holder for your Picatinny rail).
But beyond the memes and range toys, accessories should be chosen with your mission in mind. The right optic, light, or laser can be the difference between success and failure in high-stress situations. Always base your build on your expected operational environment, not just what looks good on Instagram.
Final Thoughts: Stoner’s Masterpiece Lives On
The AR-15 remains the benchmark by which all modern rifle systems are judged. While other platforms might surpass it in niche areas, few rival its balance of performance, modularity, and support. Whether you're customising for duty, defense, or daily carry, the AR offers a reliable, adaptable platform that continues to evolve alongside its users.
To quote Ronin: “It’s a toolbox. You put the tools in for the job.” And the AR? It’s the Swiss Army knife of rifle systems — always ready, always reliable.

Thank you for this series on the AR. John Moses Browning and Eugene Stoner still with us.
If these AR configs were only bought by those who actually needed them, the buyer pool wouldn't even be ankle deep.
