POTD: Canadian Army Photo of the Year Competition
Today’s images come from the Canadian Armed Forces Photo of the Year competition. Each year, military photographers submit some of their most compelling work, capturing everything from training and field exercises to daily life in uniform.
The scene shown above was taken during Exercise Collaborative Spirit at CFB Petawawa on September 24, 2025. Stakeholders spent a full day alongside Canadian Army personnel, wearing issued uniforms and protective gear to gain a closer understanding of military routines and equipment.
The distinct violet tone in this image almost brings a “purple haze” atmosphere to the moment. One could almost imagine Jimi Hendrix playing somewhere in the background. It all reminds me of one of our previous photos.
Below is a student on the Advanced Small Arms Instructor course, as he sends a rocket downrange with a Carl Gustav 84mm recoilless rifle during live-fire training at the Infantry School, 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown, New Brunswick.
We hope for more standout images from this year’s competition.

SORRY, YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO SAY THE PART ABOUT THE CARL GUSTAV A LITTLE LOUDER
Canada has an army? Is that legal in that country?
