[SHOT 2026] Winchester Supreme Long Range Keeps Accuracy In-House
Want to knock over big game a half-mile away? Winchester Ammunition has new options for you with the Supreme Long Range ammunition series, but there’s one big difference between these rounds and their other long-range hunting ammo: They’ve taken their bullet production in-house as part of a multi-year development project on this line.

Building a better bullet
Winchester has loaded plenty of ammo over the years using other manufacturers’ bullets, but their booth staff said that during COVID, they decided to start manufacturing their own projectiles. The result: The BC Max bullet.
The basic starting idea was to build a heavy-for-caliber bullet that was long and sleek. The problem was, Winchester Ammunition didn’t have the equipment they needed to make high-quality bullets along these lines, so they had to start by going and buying that machinery first. In particular, they were looking to build projectiles with more consistent jacket thickness.
Once they came up with a bullet with the aerodynamics and stability they wanted, it was then time to consider the projectile’s performance when it impacted the target. Winchester staff said they had to focus on accuracy first—having the perfect mushroom doesn’t help if your bullet doesn’t hit the right place. But they still wanted to aim for a combination of accuracy and good terminal results, with a bullet that could still perform well when striking the target at 900 yards. A lot of shooters can’t hit out at that range, but those that do require bullets that get the job done when they land on-target.
To that end, Winchester had to design a bullet with internal “staking” that forces the lead inside the jacket to expand in a controlled manner.
The end result
