POTD: The Taurus 66 Combat

Photo Of The Day: For those who favour a medium-frame wheelgun with crisp sights and a short barrel for carry, Taurus answers with the 66 Combat. This one comes wearing a surprise: a seventh cartridge in the cylinder, perhaps perfect for Hollywood movies? Or perhaps to compete with all those “+1” after-market options for pistols? This drum is built for .357 Magnum power; it will also run .38 Special (standard and +P) with no fuss.

The 66 Combat ships with a bright fiber-optic front sight, a factory-tuned combat double-action-only trigger, and a full-length ejector rod, giving it a rugged, service-ready feel.

Taurus also fitted this model with their Optic-Ready option. The RMSc-pattern mounting plate and hardware are included, so the Holosun 507K-X2 (installed here) can be attached quickly and securely for immediate use. I haven’t shot this one, but the height over bore seems a bit high for my preference. But as you surely can see, there isn’t a lot of material to machine out to get a lower mount.

Amongst all this beauty, let’s present some technical facts:

  • Frame size: Medium
  • Barrel Length: 3"
  • Overall Length: 8.4"
  • Overall Height: 5.67"
  • Overall Width: 1.52"
  • Overall Weight (unloaded): 36.5 oz

Double action only (especially when you can't get any parts from Taurus to retrofit it) was a dumb move. Especially since their revolver lockwork design (especially on double action) totally sucks compared to S&W and is really hard to improve to a really useable level. And that's if nothing else goes wrong and you have to rely on "Taurus Customer Service" for work/repair (an experience which cannot be properly described in a "family friendly" forum like this).
