Huge Rheinmetall Optics Order for Germany’s New Assault Rifle Program
Rheinmetall has secured what it describes as the largest order for laser-light modules in its history, with the Bundeswehr placing a definitive call-off for the LLM-VarioRay in support of Germany’s new assault rifle program. The order follows approval by the German Bundestag’s Budget Committee in December, 2025, and is executed under a framework agreement originally concluded in June 2021.
The current call-off represents a net order value in the several-hundred-million-euro range, making it the largest single order ever received by Rheinmetall Soldier Electronics, the subsidiary responsible for manufacturing the systems at its facility in Stockach near Lake Constance. Deliveries are scheduled to take place over the next seven years, with additional procurement options available under the same framework agreement.
The LLM-VarioRay is part of Rheinmetall’s latest generation of laser-light modules, designed primarily for use by infantry and dismounted forces. Mounted directly to an assault rifle, the system supports target detection, identification, and marking across the full spectrum of operations. Weighing approximately 250 grams, including its mount, the unit attaches via a MIL-STD-1913 rail or STANAG 4694 interface and can be operated using a remote trigger cable.
In terms of capability, the LLM-VarioRay integrates a powerful white light LED, a visible red laser, an infrared laser marker, and an electrically focusable infrared illuminator. Light sources can be selected and continuously adjusted using a rotary control. A factory-aligned, fully integrated laser block simplifies zeroing and alignment between the sighting system and the weapon. When paired with night vision or thermal imaging devices, the module enables effective operation day or night and in adverse weather conditions.
“We are grateful for the trust that the Bundeswehr has placed in our battleproven tactical combat enhancers”, said Erkan Yildirim, CEO of Rheinmetall Soldier Electronics. “The LLM-VarioRay is one of our most versatile devices. The largest order in our company’s history is an incentive for us to continue delivering cutting-edge technology. Provided that the customer places a corresponding calloff, we could also deliver the additional optional quantity within the agreed period of seven years. This would provide both the Bundeswehr and us at Rheinmetall with planning security”.
The LLM-VarioRay is already fielded as part of Germany’s Future Soldier, Extended System (IdZ-ES) and is also in service internationally, including with the British Army as the Laser-Light Module MK3 and the Swiss Army as the Laser-Light Module 19.
