We have previously covered the Wyoming State Shooting Complex, a major state-sponsored range facility coming to the Cody area. The site has now had an official groundbreaking, and the Civilian Marksmanship Program is stepping up to with a challenge grant to help fund the development. The CMP will match funding raised for the new complex up to $10 million. Their partnership in the site is far more than simple funding, though.

CMP @ TFB:

The CMP is known by many for their sales programs, most notably selling M1 Garand rifles. But those rifle sales are a fundraising mechanism to support the competition and training programs the CMP runs. These range from local club matches all the way up to the National Matches in Camp Perry, Ohio.

Breaking ground at what will become the Wyoming Shooting Complex

Wyoming’s new State Shooting Complex is a 2,000-acre site intended to house range facilities for numerous shooting disciplines. These include traditional known distance rifle ranges, pistol and action shooting bays, and a massive area for long range competitions like PRS and NRL Hunter. There are even plans for an indoor airgun range and 3D archery courses. The official groundbreaking took place recently, with the state’s governor, Mark Gordon, firing the ceremonial first shots from an M1 Garand.

This type of facility is not cheap to develop, and the CMP has extended a $10 million challenge grant to the Wyoming Shooting Complex. That grant will match, dollar for dollar, money raised from other donors up to $10 million. The CMP will also be helping with range design, and plans to possibly bring one of their stores to the site for sales of surplus military firearms. This is all just down the road from the Buffalo Bill Center, home of the famous Cody Firearms Museum. With access to ranges, a CMP store, one of the best firearm museums in the world, and Yellowstone National Park all in one place, this will surely be a popular destination for shooters.

And who knows, maybe we will get to see a CMP Vintage Sniper take on an NRL Hunter or PRS format at this facility someday!

From the press release:

“The Wyoming State Shooting Complex (WSSC) announces a transformational $10 million challenge grant from the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). The challenge grant represents the most significant private investment in the WSSC to date and will accelerate the complex’s development into the premier shooting sports destination in the nation.
The $10 million challenge grant is structured as a three-year matching initiative. For every dollar of new private or industry funding secured by the WSSC, the CMP will match it dollar-for-dollar, up to $10 million. This structure is designed to amplify community and industry investment while maximizing the long-term impact on the complex’s world-class facilities.”

Would be nice to have something of this magnitude in Texas, given our continuing massive population growth. I will probably never get an opportunity to go to this range. Same with the big Talladega shooting park in Alabama. Too far to drive to spend a few hours at a range. I know the NRA has the Whittington Center in New Mexico too, but that is also a very long drive too, and I don’t want to travel to a state that is governed by people who are hostile to the Second Amendment. Texas needs a range like this. We have more guns per capita than any other state. But very few ranges that are like these places. We have virtually no public land either. Most counties in Texas now require you to own a minimum of 10 acres in order to shoot on your land. Land is also no longer “affordable”. Hence the reason I bought some off-grid land in Oklahoma.

"One" is right on! I live a state away from this new facility, but I'd take the time to go there every chance I got/get just like I have with Gunsite for the past 40 years. I say hurray for the CMP and the WSSC!
