Silencer Saturday #425: Precision Armament TiTrex First Look
Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday, brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the new Victra 20-gauge shotgun suppressor. This week, after much tribulation and waiting on the wheels of bureaucracy, we finally have the Precision Armament TiTrex .30 caliber suppressor in hand! We will take a look at the can and show it side-by-side with some comparable models.

Features
This is not the first time we have looked at the Precision Armament TiTrex silencer here on TFB. Back in Silencer Saturday #412 we went over the features generally, and at SHOT Show we got to see it in person. After some significant regulatory delays (the flip side of everyone getting free tax stamps is that there are a lot of pending tax stamps waiting for their turn to be approved) my tax stamp is back and this TiTrex is out of jail.
The silencer ships in a robust box with cutouts inside to protect the silencer and its parts. Along with the main suppressor body, the box contains a 5/8x24 thread mount and two muzzle cap options. One is a flat cap, the other is a single-port “K Brake” to reduce recoil. There are also two spanner wrenches for tightening and loosening the front and rear caps, and some swag.
This particular review sample is a .30-caliber unit in the “dark titanium” color. FDE and olive drab color options are available too. As of writing, there are also bore options for .260 and .360 calibers, and there may be more in the future. All three bore options come in titanium. There is also a Severe Duty model in .30 caliber made of Inconel. That one is full-auto rated but weighs a few additional ounces.
Taking a closer look at the K Brake, it is very compact. It only adds about 0.16” to the overall length. Precision Armament advertises a 67% recoil reduction compared to the standard front cap. It comes in .223, .26, .30, and .36 caliber bore options for matching to different cartridges.
I broke down the TiTrex and put it on the scale. The titanium body weighs 7.3 ounces without either cap in place. With the thread adapter and the K Brake the total weight is 9.1 ounces. This is a very light can.
With the front and rear caps removed, the visible portions of the baffles look fairly standard. But that is a little deceptive. The baffle design is a “Non-Uniform Reconvergent Baffle Stack” or NURBS. Most silencers have baffles which are the same throughout the stack. The second baffle could be swapped with the fifth or seventh baffle because they are all the same (assuming it is a legacy design with machined baffles welded together). This design is different, with baffle segments that vary based on their location. Precision Armament’s testing program that designed those baffles is very interesting. You can read more about that testing in our article from SHOT Show.
One very unique feature of the TiTrex silencer is the serialized component. The “XBand” is a stainless steel ring that is press fit onto the suppressor core at the factory. If the core is damaged or worn out, the entire suppressor goes back to the factory. The Xband is removed from the damaged core and placed onto a fresh core. This is an elegant solution which doesn't rely on welding a salvaged serialized part onto a new baffle stack.
This process also works for upgrades down the road, not just repairs. Precision Armament lists a core exchange for $399 on their website. So if you buy a .30-caliber TiTrex and love it, but wish you had a .36-caliber option after buying a .350 Legend, .358 Winchester, or .35 Whelen, you can exchange the core at a much reduced cost compared to an entire suppressor.
Comparison
There is a very popular titanium silencer that weighs about 7 ounces bare and has a single-port muzzle device, the SilencerCo Scythe-Ti. That suppressor has a more traditional tubeless design with welded baffles rather than the additive manufacturing used in the TiTrex. I have a Scythe-Ti that has seen a lot of use on the Steyr Scout Mk II, among other guns, and I figured a little side-by-side comparison with these silencers would be of interest.
Both silencers weigh the same by my kitchen basement scale, coming in at 9.1 ounces with the thread adapters and brake front caps in place on both. Size-wise, these are also very similar. The TiTrex is a little skinnier and a little longer, while the Scythe is a little shorter and fatter.
The next step is getting out to the range and shooting the TiTrex on a variety of host guns, including that Steyr Scout Mk II. We’ll see you back here next week for more coverage on the world of silencers.

I lead a #rather simple life. I live in Bryggen in a 4-rooms house with an #indoor heated pool. My life isn't luxurious, even though I earn around 15,000,000 kr a year. Yes, not bad, I know, but soon my life will take a turn that will change it forever. My life is rather routine. I drink little, I #never_smoke, however, I had to smoke Marijuana at Copenhague university.
