One of the more hotly anticipated releases in the rifle world in many years has finally landed. The SIG MCX SPEAR – the civilian version of the Army’s XM7 rifle – is now available for purchase. The first runs will include 7.62×51 and 6.5CM with the .277 SIG FURY (6.8) version due shortly thereafter. Following a multi-year test and evaluation process, SIG Sauer took home the winning contract for the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program that includes a the MCX-SPEAR, the SIG Light Machine Gun, suppressors, and SIG’s hybrid case 6.8 ammo.

The MCX-SPEAR is a gas piston operated system that uses some familiar AR-10 manual of arms and magazines, while adding ambidextrous controls and a non-reciprocating side charging handle. The civilian models are sold as semiautomatic versions of the MCX-SPEAR and are offered in 13” short barreled rifle (SBR), 13” pistol, and 16.3” rifle configurations.

    Personally think the 16" barrel variant is what should have been adopted as a squad-level DMR. Just paint it something other than desert tan now that we're out of the damn desert, and reduce the crazy number of holes SIG decided to put on the forward end of the thing, it doesn't need to look like a cheese greater.

    M4s should be replaced by something in a more intermediate caliber. Roughly the same as current 5.56mm but with some improvement.

    I think I like it... don't know if I can afford it but, I like it. In 7.62 x51 too...
