Almost every American AK blogger and influencer could be found at the SHOT Show 2026 booth of a company called Roswell Rifle Works because they have released a US-made reproduction of the Russian SR-3M rifle, the holy grail of 9x39 guns. The Roswell Rifle Works SR-3M replica is 95% true to the original. The only changes are the addition of the M-LOK slots on the handguard, replacement of the original 3-lug suppressor mount with 14×1 LH muzzle threads, slight design alterations of some internal parts to simplify the manufacturing and, of course, being designed for the US civilian market, it is semi-auto only and the non-NFA variants come without a vertical front grip.

Designed in the late ‘80s, early ‘90s by TsNII TochMash, the SR-3 Vikhr is a compact personal defense weapon-style firearm chambered in the 9x39mm cartridge. It is based on the AS VAL, however, it was initially not designed to be used with a suppressor. Later, the weapon went through some design changes and the letter M, which stands for Modernised, was added to the model name. The modernized SR-3M has a quick-detach suppressor, a VAL-style side folding stock (instead of the top folding stock of the SR-3), better controls, an optics mount, a folding grip integrated into the handguard and new 30-round metal magazines to be used along with the 10 and 20-round Vintorez/VAL magazines. Many experts consider the SR-3M the best of all Soviet/Russian firearms chambered in the 9x39mm cartridge.

Roswell Rifle Works SR-3M reproductions are compatible with standard Vintorez/VAL/SR-3 magazines, but because of the scarcity of these magazines, the company is also working on making magazines. The RRW SR-3M will be available in pistol and SBR configurations and more caliber options will follow. The initial run will be 100 rifles. To be notified about the availability of these rifles, visit the company’s website and sign up for their newsletter.

Roswell Rifle Works also makes 9x39 ammunition using Starline brass and 278-grain and 300-grain bullets, loaded to subsonic velocities.
