[SHOT 2026] CMP Shows Off New Old Guns
The Civilian Marksmanship Program is best known for selling surplus US military firearms like the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine, but supplies of many of those guns are running short. The CMP has been restoring previously nonfunctional guns to safe, usable condition and beginning to produce brand new copies of original guns. Many of these efforts were on display at SHOT Show 2026.

New Production M-1 Garand
The CMP’s first foray into firearm manufacturing is continuing at speed. An initial batch of 100 test rifles entered service early in 2025, and after much validation and test firing, orders were opened for sales models. The first batch of around 600 pre-ordered guns will be shipping early this year.
This new Garand uses a Criterion or Faxon barrel, stainless steel gas cylinder, and new walnut stock. MSRP is $1950 for .308 or .30-06 models. Planned future variants include the M1D sniper as well as “Tanker” variants and alternative calibers, all of which were on display! Other caliber options are being tested and explored as well, including 6.5 Creedmoor (among others). There was even a “ gas trap” version on display, with the barrel and gas trap unit being produced by Faxon.
1903A3 Expert
One major CMP initiative is reclaiming receivers from nonfiring guns and putting them back into service. Many M1 and 1903 rifles were turned into non-functional guns for ceremonial use with minimal changes, such as a tack weld to hold the bolt closed. CMP did extensive testing on restoring Garand receivers from this condition into functional rifles again and proved it can be done safely.
This process is extending to the 1903A3 Springfield rifle. Reclaimed receivers are built out with new match-grade Criterion barrels and Minelli stocks to create quality “shooter” Springfields. The metal components are also refinished, and reproductions are in production for small parts that are in shorter supply. Minelli supplies the stocks, and after extensive work with the CMP, they have perfected a drop-in setup that requires no fitting. These stocks may become available for sale as well.
CMP started production on these rifles in November. First deliveries should be made in late February. The CMP anticipates producing 300 of these per month, and the expected price point is $950 to $1150.
Planned variants include the 1903A4 sniper with a Hi-Lux M82 scope, and possible chambering in .308 Winchester.
