[SHOT 2025] SIG Sauer’s Advanced New Machine Gun Optic - the MGL

Machine guns need optics, that sounds like an obvious statement but the stresses recoil puts on an optic are a serious factor when developing new mounted optics.

SIG Sauer is currently developing a new red dot for their family of machine guns one which incorporates some interesting capabilities. The MGL was hidden away in the centre of SIG Sauer’s booth near the latest iteration of the LMG and MMG machine guns.

While the machine guns unsurprisingly got the most attention the MGL is an exciting prospect adding another capability to the SIG optics line for their defense customers.

The MGL isn't a development out of nowhere, however, having been preceded by sights like the RK2000 and MGO.

SIG Sauer described the MGL as essentially an upscaled Romeo 4T but has an active matrix display and pairs with the 350 WARP (Weapon Attached Ranging Platform) rangefinder.

In the photo above you can see how the WARP’s display outlines the range and other details

It uses Applied Ballistics Elite software and can be paired with the optic either via Bluetooth or hard wire.

The MGL has a disturbed reticle that communicates with the WARP system to provide an immediate ballistic solution. The system takes atmospheric data and then calculates the aiming point removing the need to hold over targets.

SIG Sauer says that the MGL is still in the final prototyping stages. It will be available with any reticle and while the internals are well developed the outer casing will be less boxy and more refined.
