POTD: The FN LICC-IWS (Individual Weapon System) in .264 LICC

I haven’t tried one, and I guess I share that lack of experience with most of our readers, but the new FN LICC-IWS IPC should feel familiar if you know how to handle an M4A1. Yet it’s said to advance the platform with fully ambidextrous controls, an innovative takedown system, and a beefy, highly adjustable buttstock that can be configured to fold to either the left or right side for true user-selectable convenience. My biggest curiosity is the non-reciprocating charging handle system, which seems to look the same on both sides of the rifle.

The continuous one-piece Picatinny rail is a nice touch as well, a weak point of the AR-15 system. There are three different barrel lengths: 12.5″ for more confined spaces, 14.5″ as a standard carbine system. There’s also an 18.1″ for the designated marksman role.

According to FN America, the system consists of four complementary components:

  • FN’s Improved Performance Carbine (IPC)
  • .264 LICC (Lightweight Intermediate Caliber Cartridge), or 6.5x43mm, ammunition that improves reliability, accuracy and reduces weight
  • 25-round high-strength purpose-built polymer magazine
  • Quick detach signature suppressor that uses FN’s combination flash hider/muzzle brake design for optimized performance

The family of .264 caliber/6.5x43mm ammunition already includes a bunch of interesting variants, like the 103gr Reduced Ricochet Limited Penetration (non-toxic primer), 120gr Ballistic Match Multipurpose, 109gr Copper Monolithic Open Tip, 120gr Copper Monolithic Open Tip and the 125gr Partition Controlled Expansion (LE).
