Welcome to our Photo Of The Day feature here at The Firearm Blog. Each day, we bring you a carefully selected image that captures the essence of firearms culture, training, or action from around the world.

Today’s images come from Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, where a Royal Marine Commando with the Royal Marines Shooting Team takes aim during the Inter-Corps Infantry Team Trophy Match. Based out of the Commando Training Centre in Lympstone, England, the team traveled stateside to compete in the Marine Corps Championships, hosted by Weapons Training Battalion.

This annual event gathers the finest shooters from across regional marksmanship matches to put their skills to the test in precision rifle, action rifle, action pistol, and multi-gun disciplines. More than just a competition, it’s a tradition that dates back to the early 1900s, reflecting the Marine Corps’ enduring focus on marksmanship.

Bring back the SA-80? Or are we happier with the new KS-1?

Can someone please explain to me the value/purpose of having a piggybacked red dot with an LPVO? Seems unnecessarily redundant.

Night vision use is the primary reason. Passive aiming through a red dot is pretty easy and one is not signaling their location by activating an IR laser. Secondarily, while not using NODs, one can leave the LPVO at max magnification and use the red dot for close targets, though the scope is quick to change magnification with the throw lever.

One explanation is as a backup sight.
