FN America announced it has received a $2 million Prototype Project Opportunity Notice (PPON) from the U.S. Army to further develop its entry for the Precision Grenadier System, a next-generation soldier weapon and ammunition family designed to deliver greater lethality and pinpoint accuracy than legacy grenade launchers.

Built and engineered in the U.S. for manufacture at FN America’s South Carolina facility, the FN Multi-purpose Tactical Launcher 30mm (MTL-30™) is a soldier-portable, semi-automatic, medium-velocity launcher with a flat trajectory that extends effective engagement ranges and carries more capable payloads than older systems. Following extensive testing, FN says the MTL-30 has met the Department of Defense’s key performance requirements while also achieving the program goals of affordability, manufacturability and logistical supportability through modern production methods.

Note the sloped Picatinny top rail, because 30mm grenades fly like potatoes.
“This program is a U.S. Government priority with the shift in modern warfare and engagements, and FN is honored to be selected to develop this new, innovative solution,” said Mark Cherpes, President and CEO for FN America, LLC. “Once developed and implemented, this weapon system could radically change future battlefield strategies. It will offer new capabilities at the squad level and upgraded tactical options, giving the warfighter a more effective system.”

The MTL-30 is the first member of this launcher and ammunition family. It’s chambered for 30mm medium-velocity grenades and feeds from a detachable box magazine available in 3- or 5-round capacities.

Compact by design, the weapon measures roughly 35 inches long by 8.5 inches tall and weighs just over 10 pounds. Controls - including the bolt catch, magazine release and safety selector - are ambidextrous, and ergonomics mirror familiar M4-style interfaces: an M4-style telescoping buttstock with modular cheek riser and an intuitive pistol grip. The modular rail system features a continuous top rail for optics and visual augmentation systems, plus side M-LOK® attachment points and a MIL-STD Picatinny option.

“The FN MTL-30 shoulder-fired launcher can engage in close-quarter warfare, defeat targets in defilade, and engage unmanned aerial systems (UAS). It could also be networked with FN remote weapon stations to create a multi-layered defense against UAS,” said John Bungard, Sr. Director, Military Development Programs for FN America, LLC. “Providing solutions that can counter multiple threats is critical for future battlefield engagements. We are excited that the Army is interested in maturing our PGS solution. We are fully committed to this system and its development.”

Soldier feedback informed the MTL-30’s development, producing a lighter, more streamlined prototype that retains a familiar control layout. The launcher delivers low-felt recoil for smooth, controllable follow-up shots and rapid target engagement. Designed for field maintenance, the modular system is user-serviceable and shares a high degree of parts commonality with existing components, simplifying sustainment and lowering lifecycle cost.

“The technologies we have incorporated have allowed FN to create a system that is much lighter, more compact and more maneuverable than previous soldier-operated grenade launchers,” said Jim Williams, Vice President, Military Programs for FN America, LLC. “This will improve soldier capabilities on the battlefield, offering a robust solution for close combat, engaging targets beyond 500m or to potentially combat other threats such as unmanned aerial systems.”
