Enclosed Solar Micro Red Dots - Vortex Defender-CCW and Defender-ST

It’s probably that time of the year when we’re supposed to upgrade our firearms and optics. Vortex seems to think so, with the launch of the Vortex Defender-CCW and Defender-ST Enclosed Solar Micro Red Dots, said to be engineered for reliability in competition and duty. Their fully enclosed design shields against weather, holster wear, and accidental impacts.
Vortex Optics @ TFB:
Dual power (solar and battery) with Auto D-TEC technology (that’s just a fancy word to say that it shifts seamlessly between the two power sources) is advertised to ensure consistent performance during long, demanding days.
There’s a multi-reticle option depending on your preference, suitable from carry guns to carbines. According to Vortex, the new Defender-CCW Enclosed and Defender-ST Enclosed deliver unmatched versatility and durability across platforms.
The multi-reticle offers 3 reticle options and 12 brightness settings (10 daylight, 2 night-vision). You can see the MOA sizes below.
Some of the features include:
- ENCLOSED 7075 ALUMINUM HOUSING. Durable protection against debris and moisture
- MULTI-RETICLE. Quickly adapts to diverse shooting situations
- SOLAR WITH AUTO D-TEC TECHNOLOGY. Automatically draws power from solar or battery, as needed
- LARGE VIEWING WINDOW. For fast target acquisition and wide field of view
- ASPHERICAL LENS. For a distortion-free sight picture and truer colors
- FAST-RACK™ TEXTURED GRIP. For racking the slide off any surface
- EASY TO MOUNT. Uses Shield RMS (CCW) and DeltaPoint® Pro (ST) footprints
The Defender-ST Enclosed Solar Micro Red Dot is mounted as a secondary in the picture below. On rifles, I prefer closed optics rather than open.
In terms of pricing, the red dots on the market seem to be all over the place, high and low. The Defender-CCW™ Enclosed has an MSRP of $399.99 and the Defender-ST™ Enclosed runs an MSRP of $529.99.
Do you prefer an open or an enclosed red dot sight on your pistol and carbine?

“Oh, don’t mind me, I’m just getting my pistol some much needed vitamin D.”
Good, been hoping these would be coming soon.
