Spuhr’s New AR Upper with Patent-Pending Fitment Solution

After five years of development and multiple live-fire prototypes, Spuhr has created a new patent-pending system that eliminates the play between AR-style upper and lower receivers. This long-standing issue has frustrated shooters looking for tighter lockup and improved consistency, especially in precision or professional use.

Note also the rounded Picatinny rails.

Unlike traditional methods that rely on shims or tension screws, Spuhr's system maintains a secure fit throughout the upper's lifespan. If play ever develops over time, the system is fully adjustable, offering a long-term solution that works with both newly manufactured rifles and existing lowers.

During testing, Spuhr paired standard mil-spec lowers with their own proprietary upper, and the results were a noticeable improvement in overall rigidity and performance. In addition to solving the upper-to-lower fit issue, Spuhr also reinforced the barrel attachment point, addressing what they describe as the primary structural weakness in the AR platform.

In a traditional AR-style rifle, even a small amount of play between the upper and lower can introduce point-of-impact shifts (POI), particularly when the rifle is supported on a barricade, bipod, or sling. The reason is simple: pressure applied to the handguard or grip can cause micro-movements between the upper and lower, and even slight deflections in the barrel or optic path. This shift in geometry, though small, becomes more noticeable at a distance. This “feature”  can also be unpredictable from shot to shot, and it’s something I’ve tried and experienced myself.

This product is still in its final development phase. But as someone commented, and I totally agree, this new upper receiver design is something I’d love to try in combination with Hornady’s 6mm ARC and see where we end up in terms of precision on my DMR rifle.

    Patent Pending Fitment Solution

Totally left out ‘how’ they fixed the fitment issue which is likely the main point of interest for this type of article.

Title might as well say “Spuhr releases magic beans”.
