[SHOT 2026] The American Kalashnikov - Stenzel Industries SAK-21
Stenzel Industries SAK-21 was released a couple of months ago, and for me, as an AK aficionado, this was one of the top firearms I wanted to see and shoot at the SHOT Show 2026 because it looks like a very interesting evolution of the AK platform that borrows the best mechanical solutions from the Kalashnikov and combines them with modern design elements. At the same time, this is not just a modern-looking chassis with AK guts. While SAK stands for the Stenzel American Kalashnikov, the only interchangeable parts with the AK are the magazine and the pistol grip.
The Stenzel SAK-21 is a short-stroke piston operated firearm with an adjustable gas block. The free-floated barrel assemblies are removable, allowing the users to change barrel lengths and calibers. The SAK-21 has a last round bolt hold open mechanism with ambidextrous bolt release, however, the LRBHO will work only with special magazine followers (the rifle is compatible with standard AK mags, but the standard followers won’t activate the LRBHO).
The receiver is machined out of billet aluminum with a rear 1913 rail section for attaching a stock or brace. The hinged top cover features a Picatinny rail and the extruded aluminum handguard is free-floated. The takedown button, as well as all the controls (magazine release, charging handle, cross bolt safety, LRBHO levers), are oversized for ease of manipulation. The muzzle is threaded with the 5/8x24 thread pitch and the gun comes with a short muzzle brake attached.
The overall weight of the 12.5” barreled SAK-21 Operator (without a magazine, with an A3 Industries brace) is 8.25 lbs. Not too impressive, but not bad at all.
The SAK-21 feels quite good in terms of ergonomics and it shoots really smoothly with minimum recoil, which is probably due to the combination of the slightly heavy weight, muzzle device and fine-tuned gas system. Knowing that there is a tried and true AK engine under the hood gives a sense of confidence, which is not usually the case when shooting new guns for the first time. The only thing that feels a little odd is the cross bolt safety, but maybe it’s a matter of getting used to it.
The MSRP of the Stenzel Industries SAK-21 Operator in 7.62x39, which is the only model currently available, is $3,999.99. Yeah, four grand. The price tag is probably the weakest point of this product. I hope Stenzel Industries will find ways to drop the price.
