POTD: Swedish Air Force Rangers Deploy AK24 to Greenland
Far north of their usual operating areas, Swedish Air Force Rangers recently brought their new AK24 service rifles to Greenland as part of Arctic training operations. The deployment marks one of the northernmost appearances of Sweden’s latest standard-issue rifle to date. Would you run your weapon wet or dry?
The Rangers are participating in Exercise Arctic Endurance 26, a Danish-led winter exercise conducted in Greenland. The training forms part of NATO’s broader Arctic Sentry, aimed at strengthening cooperation and operational readiness across the Alliance’s northern flank. Sweden’s contribution includes a platoon of Air Force Rangers from Blekinge Wing, alongside fighter aircraft assigned to NATO’s air policing mission in Iceland.
Operating in extreme Arctic conditions places unique demands on both personnel and equipment. Snow, wind, and sub-zero temperatures test small arms' reliability, optics, and support gear. Bringing the AK24 into this environment provides valuable data on performance and handling under true cold-weather stress.
For the Rangers, Arctic Endurance 26 is not only about marksmanship, but mobility, survivability, and interoperability in one of the harshest climates NATO forces may face. Did you ever get to see the Northern Lights like these soldiers? I got plenty of it over the years.
