Shotgun Basics with Ernest Langdon (Beretta 1301 Setup & Skills)
Shotguns look simple until you try to run one fast. In this video, I link up with Ernest Langdon to walk through shotgun fundamentals on a Beretta 1301, focusing on the technique that keeps the gun flat and controllable instead of letting it beat you up. If your idea of recoil management is “tighten your grip and let it rip,” this will be a nice reset.
We start with how to mount the gun and use a true push-pull on the forend to manage recoil and sight movement. Ernest explains why the buttstock actually needs to be in the pocket instead of floating off your shoulder, and how a small change in hand position gives you a big change in control. None of this is theory. It is a simple, repeatable technique you can take to the range today.
From there, we talk ready conditions for a defensive shotgun and why many agencies stage their guns a certain way for safety and speed. You will see how the 1301’s controls let you get the gun working on command, and why some loading motions are smarter than others when the bolt locks back. If you have ever fumbled a shell trying to top off under pressure, this part is for you.
Ammo gets covered at a high level without turning into a gel-block dissertation. We look at how different loads behave at realistic indoor and outdoor distances and why aiming still matters with a shotgun. You will also get a sense of where slugs fit in and how they extend what a 1301 can do without treating it like a rifle.
Finally, Ernest walks through a practical 1301 setup and what each choice buys you, from stock and optic to white light and side-saddle orientation. No secret sauce, just a smart way to configure a shotgun you may actually rely on.
If you keep a 12 gauge for home defense or have been curious about the Beretta 1301, this is a clean, no-nonsense primer with techniques that work when the timer or the stakes go up. Watch the video and steal what helps.
