[SHOT 2025] Staccato's New HD 2011 Pistols with Glock Mags

Staccato has a new family of 2011-style pistols with some very interesting changes. The new HD series incorporates Glock-pattern magazines and a new trigger mechanism that is drop safe. But the changes don’t stop there, keep reading to see all the other tweaks.

Staccato @ TFB:

The HD series is a departure from Staccato's prior 2011 in several ways. Unlike those guns, it uses Glock mags. Staccato includes two 18-round Glock-pattern magazines manufactured by Mec-Gar with the HD pistols. The HD pistols have also been tested with factory Glock mags as well as Magpull and both function correctly. Though they use Glock mags, which have a steeper angle than 1911 mags, the HD series keeps the 17.5-degree grip angle of other 2011 pistols. The grip feels a little different still, and that is because the grip safety found on other 2011 pistols is omitted from the HD. Both the manual safety and slide catch are ambidextrous, and the magazine catch is reversible.

Another design change is the trigger mechanism. Previously, Staccato used a Series 70 trigger mechanism to get the best possible trigger. But the Series 70 does not have a firing pin safety, and guns with that trigger mechanism across manufacturers have been known to fire when dropped. Staccato used a modified Series 80 in the HD to prevent this from happening.

There are two models in the HD family at this time. The P4 has a 4-inch barrel, and the P4.5 has a 4.5-inch barrel. The P4.5 differs by including a fixed front sight block. The P4 will be available starting January 28th, and the P4.5 is coming this spring. MSRP for the P4 is $2,499 and $2,699 for the P4.5.

Staccato's booth was packed with people every time I walked past.

No backstrap safety is a no go for me. A 1911 can be safely carried either locked & cocked, or only cocked, safely. Many of the AD's by striker fired is due to no backstrap safety. I will never have a striker fired without a back strap safety. As they typically do not have a toggle safety. With a backstrap safety. Holstering can be done safely by pushing down on the back of the slide. Not depressing the backstrap safety. Even if something catches the trigger, not going to fire. Then there is the if dropped issue. Also makes it safer if removing a pistol from a suspects holster. Pulling it out by the rear of the slide, no chance of an AD.

I have only one without a back strap safety. Kimber micro nine. Really wish it had one. Nice & light & small for concealed carry. Does not hurt my old hips like the larger heavier 1911's.

I get they are trying to un-complicate the the trigger assembly. Yet, the extra complication is for a very good reason.

Due to the safety issue of no backstrap or toggle safety. The striker fired typically have a terribly high weight pull. People install aftermarket trigger kits. To soften the trigger pulls. Which for the average person nowadays. No shooting or little shooting experience. Is a recipe for an AD. Also can allow for a double tap for someone not accustomed to such a light trigger.

1911 typically have lighter trigger pulls. Also common to manipulate or replace the spring for an even lighter & or better, crisper, pull than factory.

I carried double action, single action revolvers & auto's for most of my life. Now that I am an old guy. Damaged trigger finger, motorcycle crash induced. Not caring for striker fired triggers. I have gravitated towards 1911 pistols. Kinda going full circle from when I carried a 1911 as a paratrooper a lifetime ago.

If I become weak enough in the coming years. Not able to pull a slide any longer. Will need a top loader or revolver. Not giving up the age tested 1911, preferably with a backstrap safety, any time soon, hopefully!

The beavertail grip safety was a stupid idea in 1911 and it’s a stupid idea now.

Yep, if there were one thing people really needed for their $3,000 pistol is the ability to slap $8.00 Glock mags into it. LOL Personally, I am waiting to by my Lambo until they come out with one that will take regular unleaded gas.

Glock mags are cheaper, more reliable, and more available than 2011 mags. Plus they seem to want to get more LE sales, hence the series 80 trigger mechanism and the use of Glock mags.
