POTD: Northrop Grumman Precision Grenadier System (PGS)
For today’s edition of TFB’s Photo Of The Day, we have pictures of Northrop Grumman’s new Precision Grenadier System (PGS). Designed to be used in a variety of applications, including anti-UAV warfare, this shoulder-fired 25-mm grenade launcher is a semi-automatic firearm fed from 5-round magazines and weighing just under 12 pounds.
Here is the list of the main features of Northrop Grumman's Precision Grenadier System:
- Weight Reduction. Designed to be both durable and light weight PGS utilizes a titanium barrel with a reinforced polymer over-mold.
- Inductively Set. Ammunition programing takes place inductively in the barrel for improved weapon reliability.
- 25mm 5-Round Magazine. Semi-automatic action enables user to rapidly engage targets with precision.
- Ambidextrous Controls. Ergonomic design allows for easy manipulation for both left and right-handed users.
- Recoil Reduction. Recoil tested and proven to be comparable with currently fielded Counter-sUAS systems.
- Next-Gen Fire Control. Utilizes US Army’s XM157 Fire Control to program advanced ammunition types and provide ballistic solution.
At the time of writing, there are four 25mm rounds developed for the PGS (left to right in the picture above):
- High Explosive Air Burst (HEAB). HEAB is a programmable, dual-warhead high-explosive fragmenting round that can be fired in both airburst and point detonate.
- High Explosive Proximity. Incorporates a proximity sensor to identify and explosively fragment the projectile in-flight to defeat stationary or moving UAS. Round does not require programming.
- Close Quarter Battle (CQB). CQB round is a buckshot round enabling close quarter engagements such as breaching, room clearing, trench clearing, and close-range C-UAS.
- Target Practice (TP). The 25mm TP round is a low-cost, inert training round that is ballistically matched to the 25mm HEAB and 25mm PROX rounds.

The M-79 Grenade launcher with its 40mm single shot had an atrocious sight. Hope they give the grunts better option than a 25mm grenade. For trench war as in Ukraine
airburst might work. That 40mm was never meant to punch through anything just the phycological effect it had on the enemy.
Prox fuse in a 25mm round is impressive.
