POTD: No Room for Guesswork in Polar Bear Country

This Photo Of The Day contains a very high dose of masculinity. When heading into remote Arctic territory, preparation is not optional. Captain Petr Kos of the 118-year-old polar vessel ANNA selected the CZ 600+ LUX chambered in .30-06 Springfield for his voyage to Svalbard, where carrying a firearm outside settlements is said to be a legal requirement due to the presence of polar bears.

The CZ 600+ LUX is a traditional bolt-action rifle built on CZ’s updated 600+ platform. The LUX variant combines a steel receiver with a walnut stock featuring a classic European profile and cheekpiece. The rifle uses a detachable magazine system and a user-adjustable trigger. It is equipped with fiber-optic iron sights and a threaded muzzle to accommodate muzzle devices or suppressors where legal. The 600+ series incorporates design updates over earlier CZ 600 models, while maintaining a conventional hunting rifle layout intended for field use.

Have you ever been to Svalbard? Well, I have, but we flew there and then went on a Ski-Doo expedition. I remember the local shops had gun safes to lock in your firearm before going shopping.

Take "enough Gun" when entering bear country.

I was going to say "in before all the '.30-06 isn't enough for polar bears'.." but too late. It's nonsense of course, people in those areas have been successfully defending themselves with .30-06 for over 100 years. Are there bigger, more powerful cartridges that offer more of a 'safety net" in case of a bad shot? Of course, but that in no way diminishes the ability of the .30-06 to stop a polar bear.
