Fen X Launches Smartphone-Scanned Custom Earplugs for Shooters
If you've ever looked into custom-molded earplugs, you know the drill: Find an audiologist, make an appointment, get impressions taken with that weird goop, wait 4-6 weeks, and drop $300-400 by the time you're done. Fen X, a Michigan outfit, thinks they've got a better way: Scan your ears with your iPhone, order online, and get custom earplugs in 48 hours.
The company just launched its new website at fenxcustom.com with an interesting pitch: Skip the audiologist completely. If you've got an iPhone 10 or newer, their app uses AI to scan your ear canals and create what CEO Gary Lemanski calls "a perfect image." No physical molds, no appointments, no shipping impressions back and forth.
All you have to do is download the Fen X app, use your phone's camera to scan both ears, place your order, and they'll 3D print and ship your custom earplugs within 48 hours. That's a heck of a lot faster than the 3-6 week timeline with traditional custom earplugs.
What They Offer for Shooters
Fen X has an "Extreme Activity" collection that includes shooting sports options. They offer different filter configurations depending on what you need; one setup with modest noise reduction if you want to stay focused but still hear what's going on around you, and another with higher noise reduction that still allows some communication. They also offer versions for concerts, swimming, sleeping, and other activities.
They sell custom adapters for popular wireless earbuds like AirPods Pro, Sony WF-1000XM5, and Bose QuietComfort. So if you want custom-fit tips for your everyday earbuds in addition to dedicated hearing protection, they've got you covered.
The Money Question
Fen X custom earplugs run $99-$149, depending on which model and filters you want. For context, traditional audiologist-fitted custom earplugs from providers like EAR Inc. or 1of1 Custom typically cost $250-$350 or more, plus you're paying for the audiologist appointment itself—figure another $50-$150 depending on where you live. So you're looking at roughly half the cost with Fen X.
They offer a 3-year warranty and advertise a "no-risk policy," though the press release doesn't spell out exactly what that means in terms of fit guarantees or return windows.
The Big Question Mark
I haven't tested these yet, so I can't tell you if they actually work as advertised. The company claims their AI scanning is "more accurate than traditional molding," which is a bold statement when you're comparing a phone camera to physical impressions taken by trained professionals. That's the kind of claim that needs hands-on verification.
We also don't have details on their "no-risk warranty." Does it cover fit issues? How long do you have to request a remake? What's the actual process if the earplugs don't fit right? Most traditional custom earplug makers offer 45-60 day fit guarantees with free remakes during that window, so it'd be good to know if Fen X matches that.
The 48-hour turnaround is impressive on paper. Traditional custom earplugs take 3-6 weeks from impression to delivery, so even if Fen X's actual delivery time ends up being closer to a week, that's still significantly faster. But "impressive on paper" and "what actually happens" aren't always the same thing.
Should You Try It?
The concept is solid: Custom hearing protection without the hassle and expense of audiologist visits. The pricing is competitive, the turnaround is fast, and if the smartphone scanning actually works as advertised, this could be a legitimate option for shooters who want custom protection without the traditional barriers.
The catch is we don't know yet if it actually works. Smartphone scanning producing genuinely custom-fit earplugs is one of those things that sounds great until you actually try it. I'd be curious to hear from anyone who's used these—if you have a set, let us know in the comments how they fit and perform.
If you own an iPhone 10 or newer and you're interested, you can check it out at fenxcustom.com. Their FAQ page has more details on the scanning process, and you can review their warranty policy before ordering. Just remember: hearing protection only works if it actually fits properly and you wear it consistently. Repeated exposure to gunfire will absolutely wreck your hearing permanently, so don't cheap out on protection that doesn't actually protect.

Deci-buls $25 or so- mold them yourself in your kitchen fit fine and work good
Most years at the SHOT SHOW there was a booth that featured audio products, headphones & the like. But the real show was the custom earplugs made on the spot.
After giving them U$50.00 & choosing your colour the nice girl squeezed the goo into both ears while you sat on this barstool-like chair. After a couple ten minutes the goo firmed up solid, she pulled them out & said “Come back in an hour & they’ll be ready.”
She installed an anchor on both, with a string & a carrying case. Presto, done.
