Springfield Armory has been making their own version of a semi-custom 2011 handgun for multiple years now, and they have announced their newest iteration today in the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5” AOS 9mm. So, we are going to take a look at this micro wonder to see if it is as capable as its larger-framed counterparts. Let’s dive in!

So, what’s the upsell? What’s the metaphorical and literal 30-second elevator pitch? For the 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5” AOS 9mm, you’re looking at several prominent traits that might tip the scale in favor of Springfield Armory as opposed to a competing manufacturer at a similar price-point.

One of the most common and recurring questions I receive reviewing firearms and their related products is, “what’s in the box?” Meaning, what do you all get with your purchase. This is important because what you do and do not get will dictate what type of accessories you need to additionally buy depending on what you want your end-product or concealed carry setup to look like. All this being said, this is everything that you will receive:

Range Experience - Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5” AOS 9mm

So, how did this perform out on the range? I, personally, own a Prodigy Comp 5” 9mm. So, I am pretty familiar with how this smaller version should perform, but we will see if my internal dialogue matches reality.

AOS Optics Mounting

First off, let’s look at the mounting system. The AOS (Agency Optic System) plates used to be a relatively new idea when the Prodigy originally came out, and now (fast forward 4-5 years) and it is considered the standard for the 2011 platform.

For this review, I did shoot a little bit with a red dot, but then I reverted back to iron sights. I chose to do that because 99% of my shooting is done with red dots, and I tend to mentally tune out while shooting red dots - I’m too comfortable with them. All this being said, the AOS plates utilize Torx screws (rarely if ever slip or strip out), the screws are pre-Loctited, and everything mounted securely (as expected).

Accuracy

In terms of accuracy, this pistol not only wasn’t picky on what you fed through it, but it was equally as accurate as it was reliable. I fired some Fiocchi “Training Dynamics” 9mm 115 Grain FMJ as well as multiple fistfuls of random hollow-points (HP). Regardless of what this lil’ pistol chugged through, it cycled perfectly and was as accurate as my over-caffeinated body could be.

I thought with the random assortment of hollow-points that I shot that I might experience some kind of Failure-to-Feed/Fire (FTF) or Failure-to-Eject/Extract (FTE), but that never occurred. So, that was impressive to me.

Durability

As far as durability is concerned, this pistol has a lot going in its favor. The Black Cerakote finish we’ve already discussed is a great coating to ensure you don’t have flecks of rust developing between trips to the range. Also, it is abrasion resistant (relative to a standard bluing). So, whether it is the simple bumps of everyday carry or more potentially detrimental circumstances, like rattling around in a holster while hunting, your investment and firearm is better protected.

Also, you have the forged carbon steel slide assembly and billet 7075-T6 aluminum frame (finished in a Black Cerakote), which aids in the durability factor. Yes, a significant portion of the grip is polymer, but it is also replaceable. If the one element of this pistol that is polymer fails or cracks erroneously, you can always replace it with something different that is to your liking.

Intangibles

Springfield has a lifetime warranty that stands behind their products. For those who read TFB a lot, you already know that I’m the “Springfield guy.” I love their products and I try to catch my own biases on the front end, but knowing that a company offers a lifetime warranty should already tell you everything. Essentially, they have so much trust and faith in their products that they are banking on the fact that you will never have to use that warranty. In the decade plus of reviewing and personally owning Springfield firearms, I have yet to need to actually use that warranty.

Lastly, I like how clean the Prodigy is designed and presented. There is no dragon’s breath checkering pattern… no arbitrary optic mounting system… no gimmicky crap. This pistol has all of your 21st century essentials - accessory rail, optics ready, Cerakote, reliable, high capacity, the color black - and no click-bait crud about it.

Final Thoughts

So, what are my final thoughts on the Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5” AOS 9mm?... This pistol shoots eerily similar to its larger-framed brethren. Yes, there is a touch more recoil since it is smaller and lighter, but not so much that it is a detriment to accuracy. With the adaptive grip texturing and smooth cycling of the slide, this pistol is very controllable even in this diminutive form factor. If you’re searching for a smaller 2011 option, I’d suggest giving this one a good look.
