Taurus have announced the launch of the Taurus 650, a new 2in barrel revolver with a double action only trigger and a shrouded hammer. The new revolvers are also available in a 3in configuration with all models chambered in .357 /.38 Special.

The Taurus 650 is available in stainless steel and black finishes. MSRP for the black finish models is $454.99 while the stainless models are available at $469.99.

Key Features of the Taurus 650:

  • Durable Steel or Stainless Steel Frame: Built to withstand rigorous use, the Taurus 650’s steel or stainless steel frame provides the durability needed for both daily carry and extended shooting sessions.
  • Double Action Only (DAO) Trigger System: The 650’s DAO trigger offers a smooth and consistent pull, enhancing shooting precision and reliability in high-stress environments.
  • Five-Shot Cylinder Chambered in .357 Magnum / .38 Spl +P: The Taurus 650 is chambered to handle up to .357 Magnum, allowing it to also fire .38 Special and .38 Special +P loads, providing flexibility in ammunition choice.
  • Shrouded Hammer for Snag-Free Concealment: The internal shrouded hammer ensures a seamless draw from concealment, minimizing snags and enabling easy operation even from a pocket or bag.
  • Removable Serrated Blade Front Sight: The blade front sight is serrated to reduce glare and allow for quick accuracy in all lighting conditions. The front sight is also removable, allowing it to be swapped out to meet your personal preference

Here’s what Taurus have to say about the 650:

”With the growing popularity of small-frame revolvers for personal defense, Taurus—a leader in revolver innovation—proudly reintroduces the Taurus 650, a true shrouded hammer, 5- shot revolver chambered in the venerable .357 Magnum. This expertly engineered firearm joins Taurus's industry-leading lineup of reliable and versatile small-frame revolvers, answering the call for a compact, snag-free defensive option.
Designed for Concealment and Reliability
Experienced shooters and new revolver owners alike have been asking for the return of a shrouded hammer revolver designed for concealed carry, and Taurus has answered. The Taurus 650 offers a smooth, Double Action Only (DAO) trigger pull with an internal shrouded hammer, making it the ultimate choice for everyday carry and quick deployment in critical situations, even allowing the revolver to be fired from pocket concealment without fouling or jamming the action.
"This is the ultimate expression of what my friend Darryl Bolke refers to as 'the snubby lifestyle',” said Caleb Giddings, Manager of Marketing, Taurus USA. "Some people want a simple, reliable DAO revolver they can carry every day, and this gun answers that need perfectly."
The Taurus 650 is compatible with a variety of existing 5-shot speed loaders and holsters for similar .357 Magnum models, making it versatile and user-friendly for both experienced shooters and new users alike.”

Taurus have also released a video showcasing the 650:

l owned the Smith and Wesson model 640 and carried it as an EDC for about 15 years alternating with a Glock 19, depending on where I was at. I only used full powerv357 in it. At 24 ounces it was not fun to shoot but bearable and practical.

I worked 4 law enforcement agencies and believe in fir round dominance. 15 rounds are baggage if you are shot first, so 500 fpe that you can put on target is a big deal. Self defense shootings are at night, close and one handed shootings. Lasers solve the optics problem and one hand shooting requirements.

This one is half the price of my 640. Taurus wheel guns are great, glad to see it. As a practical matter this gun will last forever because people will not shoot enough full power ammo through it to cause much wear on it due to recoil. On the other hand, they are a blast to fire a few at the range.

And for those who question their use, as police officers we had to qualify at 25 yards with any backup gun you carried. With a 2 hand hold they are accurate enough. Anybody can shoot a Glock well, not everyone can shoot a DA wheel gun well and not everyone can handle recoil. But everyone would be happy to have this little guy in the jacket pocket when a threat is approaching.

I concur. I was working with a new shooter this weekend who is petite. She had been shooting my G44 and then G19. Her parents had loaned her a Taurus .38SPL. The first time she shot her revolver she was stunned at the difference in recoil. She is going to complete her training and then go shopping for something with less recoil.
