This Photo of the Day has a lot going on, just the way we like it. Some training days need more real estate than others. During a Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure exercise at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit turned the surrounding sea and airspace into one crowded stage.

The calculus driving modern air defense has inverted in the last three years. Adversaries discovered that cheap drones can force defenders to spend six-figure interceptor missiles, and the math stopped working. The Marine Corps' answer is layered: keep electronic warfare as the first filter, then add a kinetic option that costs ten dollars per engagement instead of ten thousand. Allen Control Systems' Bullfrog autonomous weapon station is that kinetic layer, and it just landed a $6.2 million prototype contract to prove itself on the Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System.

The Interservice Rifle Competition has been sorting out the best rifle shots in the U.S. military for 65 years, and the 65th edition at Weapons Training Battalion, Marine Corps Base Quantico, showed the standard is still climbing. Finland's coastline has a way of sharpening allied relationships. During exercise Narrow Waters 26 at Upinniemi, Finland, in May 2026, Marines from 2nd Force Reconnaissance Company, 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division conducted weapons and boat familiarization training alongside Finnish forces, getting hands-on time with the gear their NATO partners stake their defense on.

The image shows a machine gunner with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, during a live-fire range at Camp Schwab. I think it’s safe to say he’s not carrying his machine gun in this image, but the M27. But what’s interesting is the HERA Arms CQR front grip, which is a first to me at least. The training was focused on maintaining and reinforcing marksmanship fundamentals, a core requirement regardless of weapon system or assignment.

As with most people’s lives, we don’t get proper machine gun content every day, but when it shows up, it tends to deliver. Here’s to the U.S. Marines from Battalion Landing Team 3/5, part of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, seen running M240B machine guns during a live-fire exercise at sea.

Talk about perfect timing! Marines of the Silent Drill Platoon, Marine Barracks Washington, took to the parade field at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, to perform during a fly-over by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels’ “Fat Albert” C-130J Super Hercules. The 24-Marine platoon is a demonstration unit known for its precision, discipline, and ceremonial excellence, representing the traditions of the Marine Corps as well as the service and sacrifice of Marines past and present.

Today’s Photo of the Day features U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Deondre Dennard firing a Mossberg 500 shotgun during a non-lethal weapons course at Camp Pendleton, California. The training, hosted by Marines from 1st Law Enforcement Battalion in 2020, covered proper employment of non-lethal force in both policing and combat scenarios. The shotgun, often underrated, is actually one of the most powerful firearms available to civilians. At the same time, it’s extremely versatile, as it can throw a lot of different types of ammunition out of the barrel.

Ever since my Concamo Ghosthood Confusion Camouflage System review, I’ve admired the simplicity of the system and respected the amazing efficiency of the camouflage. Regardless of whether the U.S. Marines read our review or not, they’re now evaluating the system. During the evaluation, it seems a few Marines went missing.

Beretta has released a limited-edition A300 Ultima Patrol Raider produced to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps. The Raider pairs the A300 platform with a Frogskin-pattern finish inspired by early disruptive camouflage used in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Each shotgun is individually serialized and delivered with a custom wooden presentation case and a wooden ammo crate with velvet lining and rope handles.

In today’s POTD, U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Hunter Serrano, a point man with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, sends rounds downrange with his M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle in the 11” RWK configuration, during a live-fire training session at Camp Pendleton, California. This is the first time I’ve ever seen the RWK with an EOTech sight and a magnifier.

Guess what happened 250 years ago? A United States Marine Corps veteran will tell you—back in 1775, the USMC was founded. Now, Henry Repeating Arms is honoring those two-and-a-half centuries of service around the world with the Spirit of the Corps Tribute Edition rifle.
