SIG Sauer HYP 6.8x51 Rifle: The First DI Rifle for Hybrid Ammo
TFB first showed the SIG HYP rifle from the SIG NEXT Range Day in July 2025, when very few details were known. SIG Sauer's product page now fills in the picture, where the SIG HYP 6.8X51 goes under the tagline "Unlock the Potential of Hybrid Ammunition." Let’s take a closer look and see what the HYPe is all about.
The HYP is the first direct impingement modern sporting rifle capable of firing high-pressure hybrid ammunition. It is chambered in 6.8x51mm, also called 277 SIG FURY, and is built to deliver raw power, reliability and accuracy. High-quality components support that job, including a steel cam path insert, a steel feed ramp and a chrome-lined, hammer-forged barrel.

The engine is a four-position adjustable mid-length direct impingement gas system. The adjustable gas block lets owners tune the rifle for the mission at hand, whether suppressed or unsuppressed and in any adverse condition.
The 16-inch barrel has a 1:7 twist and 5/8-24 tapered shoulder threads, and delivers high velocities and repeatable accuracy across all bullet weights. A free-floating M-LOK alloy handguard makes it easy to add aftermarket accessories and promotes smooth handling.
Controls are fully ambidextrous, covering the bolt catch, magazine catch, safety and charging handle. A SIG Matchlite DUO curved trigger is fitted to enhance accuracy, and replaceable steel-reinforced components protect the high-wear areas. The included magazine is a 20-round steel unit developed as part of the U.S. Army's Next Generation Squad Weapon Program, and the rifle uses the AR-10 magazine type. The HYP is covered by the SIG Sauer Infinite Guarantee, which means no receipt, no warranty card and fully transferable coverage that lasts forever.
The listed specifications are an overall length of 38 inches (35 inches collapsed), a width of 2.5 inches, a height of 7.5 inches and a weight of 8.7 pounds. The finish is black anodized, and the rifle has no forward assist. The price is $2,729.99.

For the Army, it is a solution looking for a problem. It is much like .40 cal. If you want more capacity, there is 9mm. If you want a bigger bullet, there is .45ACP. For this, you either want more capacity (5.56) or you want a bigger bullet (7.62).
For anyone who wants one, enjoy. I own a few guns that make me smile but have no practical purpose. I just resent the waste of US tax dollars on a weapon system that has no military purpose.
Oh snap! Steel feed ramps!
