POTD: The Akdal MKA 1919 Shotgun
Going back in time almost 15 years, and the competition world was looking for an AR-style shotgun for 3-Gun and IPSC Shotgun. Enter the Akdal MKA 1919. A gas-operated, semi-automatic shotgun designed by Turkish company Akdal Arms, resembling the M16 rifle in appearance and control layout. It features a gas-operated action around a support tube beneath the barrel, with a return spring concealed by a polymer handguard.
We did a lot of crazy modifications, and they performed quite well. But there were problems. Some parts seemed to be made out of soft steel, which, perhaps, the average Turkish hunter will never have an issue with. But we were blazing down thousands of rounds, including slugs, bucks and birds and a lost second can never be retrieved in competition. So things were breaking, with all sorts of issues. Even some of the “upgrades” from the US seemed to be made out of soft steel.
The daily cleaning was a hassle as well. If I remember correctly, it took us some 20 minutes to disassemble the shotgun, just to start cleaning. I managed to sell mine and barely got the money back. But I did manage to snap some cool images.
