POTD: Made in India, Built for NATO: The SSS M72 Assault Platform

Photo Of The Day and we go to India to take a closer look at some marketing images of SSS Defence’s M72. Chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO and built around a short-stroke piston architecture, the design distills lessons learned by others and mimics similar systems already in use. In case you don’t remember, SSS Defence is competing in the UK Ministry of Defence’s Project Grayburn program, which we’re watching with interest.

The M72 comes with fully ambidextrous controls, Picatinny and M-LOK rail coverage, and a field-swappable trigger. Engineered in Bharat (that’s India, in other words), and positioned to compete globally against established NATO-caliber designs.

Three barrel lengths exist: 12.5, 13.5, and 14.5 inches. From the data sheet: The 12.5” version is 715mm long and weighs 2.8kg. The 14.5” version weighs 3.0kg.

    Why is Britain looking for a new rifle; they barely have an army and what they have they can't fund.

    6.0kg. I will bet that is w/o full magazine. That looks like a 30 rd (at least - or more - maybe a 40 rd magazine). What does it weigh then? Oh! Don't forget the 6 loaded magazines, at least, that the troop has somewhere on his LBE. Large magazines look warlike but sure add significant weight to the already overloaded troop!
