Available Now: Federal’s Personal Defense HST 44 Magnum
Looking for heavy-duty hitting power from your magnum revolver, but you don’t want to worry about overpenetration? There’s a new option on the market that promises just that—the new Personal Defense HST .44 Magnum loads from Federal.
Do you feel lucky, punk? @ TFB:
Ever-improving performance
The new Personal Defense HST .44 Magnum loads are part of Federal’s latest push to keep improving its self-defense lineup. The idea is that they wanted to build a load that hit harder than a .44 Special, but still allowing the shooter to have improved control and less overpenetration than a full-powered hunting load, says Chris Laack, product manager for Federal’s handgun ammo line. And, Laack says they succeeded, with “light magnum” performance available from the new load, still with more knockdown power than popular competing cartridges. The carefully designed .44-caliber bullet was the key to their success.
“Its cartridge-specific bullet design best utilizes the magnum power available for defense and has more energy than 10mm Auto and 357 Mag yet with a larger 44 Mag projectile,” says Laack. “When matched with the HST bullet design, the 44 Magnum provides the energy to achieve both effective penetration depth and significant hollow-point expansion.”
Laack goes on to say, “This HST does exactly what a great hollow-point bullet should.” That means good weight retention to match the expansion, and superior terminal ballistics using law enforcement testing methods.
The new load comes with nickel-plated casings and a sealed primer for reliability; the cartridges are sold in 20-round boxes and Federal lists a $55.99 MSRP. Pricey stuff, but if you want that performance, you might be happy to pay to play. See more details here.

All I ask for is a reliable and accurate bullet that will penetrate deeply without dangerously over-penetrating, expands quickly and well through any medium, and provides such performance at every distance from the muzzle to infinity.
I use HST in almost all my carry guns but I can't see any advantage but definitely a couple disadvantages to carrying a .44 magnum revolver as a concealed carry gun. If you're carrying a .44 magnum for four legged defense you aren't going to want this ammo in your gun. I don't doubt there's someone out there who can justify carrying a .44 magnum for two legged defense but that's a tiny market.
