After Dark: SIG Sauer's Custom Works P320-NIGHTSHIFT

Most pistols are built to look the same at noon and at midnight. The P320-NIGHTSHIFT is built to look like it only comes out after dark. This is a SIG Sauer Custom Works P320, billed as "Custom Works. After Dark," and the first thing you notice is the contrast. A pale Platinum Cerakote covers the optic-ready slide and the full-size SXG steel grip module, and against it sit parts finished in Burnt Titanium PVD: the controls, the trigger, the magwell and the compensator. The grip panels are custom Hogue pieces with a Circle Cell pattern, so the whole pistol reads as a deliberate design instead of a parts-bin build. I might not love the pistol itself, but I love the looks - let’s see if you agree?

The looks come with a job description. SIG Custom Works describes the NIGHTSHIFT as the ultimate P320 for competition, carry and everything in between, with substantial recoil reduction and improved functionality. The SXG grip module and the single-port compensator work together to improve control and cut muzzle movement.

The compensator sits on a 4.6-inch barrel, and the slide is optic-ready with the SIG-LOC PRO footprint, so the shooter can pick a preferred sighting system. No electronic optic is installed, but XRAY3 Day/Night sights come fitted. The pistol also features a flat blade striker-fired trigger, M1913 accessory rails and two 21-round steel magazines come in the box.

There is one quirk worth knowing about before buying. Burnt Titanium PVD is a spectrum of colors, so no two parts will match exactly, and each will show slightly different shades and hues. The finish can also change color with use. An alcohol wipe brings the original hue back. It is the sort of living finish that makes a custom pistol feel less like a catalog item and more like a tool that wears in.

This is one of SIG’s upcoming pistols, with a listed price of $2,479.99.

Platinum with Burnt Titanium accents: is that a look you would carry or only shoot at the range in full daylight? I am kind of hoping I could find a matching timepiece for my wrist, something I could carry unconcealed.

  • Great looking, and all around solid pistol. It's a shame that LEOs with weapon mounted lights, in poorly designed WML holsters, kept having NDs.

That's one of the fairest assessments I've seen written yet.

Does this model come with the shake-awake feature?
