The Taurus 608 Competition Is Built For Speed
Taurus continues to expand its wheelgun lineup into upscale new models, with the latest addition being a new gun intended for competitive shooters. The aptly named Taurus 608 Competition just dropped on the market, and it is packed with features to help you win under pressure.
Taurus revolvers @ TFB:
Based on a familiar foundation
This revolver is based on the previous Taurus 608 full-sized revolver model. This wheelgun has been around for almost 30 years; it was introduced in 1997 as a revamp of the even earlier Model 607 revolver. With an eight-round cylinder chambered in .357 Magnum, adjustable sights and smoothed-out internals, the idea was to build a slick-shooting double-action/single-action handgun on par with more expensive competitors.
Upgrades for competition
Now, we see the Taurus 608 Competition arriving with even more upgrades to make it suitable for shooters competing at Steel Challenge or other events.
An adjustable trigger comes standard, with no tools needed to tweak the settings. The chambers are chamfered for quick reloading, and the cylinder is cut for moonclips. There’s a new green fiber-optic front sight and the rear sight is adjustable—or removable, in case you want to install an aftermarket optic mount. Like the original 608, the Competition comes capable of accepting eight rounds of .357 Magnum or .38 Special; Taurus also shaved a lot of weight off the cylinder, getting down to an unloaded weight of 51 ounces. And so you have better control, a set of large VZ Target grips come pre-installed.
The Taurus 608 Competition also benefits from having some features deleted; note that the 6-inch barrel has no compensator built-in, so the revolver can be used in a wider range of contests.
A transfer bar safety comes standard, and the 608 Competition has six-groove rifling with a 1:16.5-inch right-hand twist.
Counting the cost
Taurus’s website says “If you have been thinking about getting into revolver competition or are a long-time competitor looking for a ready-to-go race gun, the 608 Competition is your best bet.” Bold words indeed. MSRP is $1015.99; see more details here.
