Packing a Punch: A History of the M14
The M14 rifle holds a significant place in the history of American military firearms, serving as a bridge between the battle rifles of World War II and the US’ military’s modern assault rifles. Developed in the post-World War II era, the M14 was the standard-issue rifle for the U.S. military during the early stages of the Vietnam War. Despite its relatively short service life (though it has soldiered on in niche roles), the M14 is like that crazy ex-girlfriend that somehow keeps coming back when you least expect it. This year marks the M14’s 72nd birthday and the 52nd anniversary of its civilian variant, the M1A produced by Springfield Armory. And with the recent new that the CMP would be making surplus M14s available, I thought this would be a good time to look back at the history and development of one of my favorite battle rifles of all time.

CMP To Being Selling Surplus M14 Rifles
It’s finally happening, boys. The CMP has just announced that it will begin selling surplus M14 rifles. This has been a hoped-for but unlikely step for many years; however, it seems like it is coming later this year.
TFB Review: Is the Springfield Armory M1A Still Relevant in 2025?
The good old M1A, it's a rifle we have talked about over and over again here at TFB. While its a design that is coming up on being 70 years old, there are still many people today who love this rifle. Whether it's for the rifle's historical importance, aesthetics, or a personal connection, it's a firearm that simply won't die even in the year 2025. With myself being someone who always dreamed about owning an M14 / M1A ever since watching Black Hawk Down when I was a teenager, you can imagine my excitement when Springfield Armory agreed to send me one of their M1A Standard Issue rifles to review. With this rifle, I aim to answer one simple yet apparent question: is the M1A still relevant in 2025?
POTD: The M14 - Precision at a Thousand Yards
Hitting a target at 1,000 yards isn’t just about pulling the trigger, it’s about reading the wind, trusting your fundamentals, and understanding the ballistic arc of your round over nearly ten football fields. It’s also where mechanical precision meets human discipline, with no room for shortcuts. In today’s POTD, U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Keaton Austin-Reed, a member of the Marine Corps Shooting Team, sends rounds downrange during the Annual Interservice Rifle Championship at the Calvin A. Lloyd Range Complex on Marine Corps Base Quantico, June 10, 2025.
