I remember buying my first concealed carry holster more than ten years ago. I was coming off the high of passing my concealed carry class and decided it would be a good time to go shop for holsters. I recently had the opportunity to attend a special event put on by the Safariland Group down in Florida. Just about an hour or so north of Orlando in the middle of nowhere lies Deep Woods Ranch – the home of form Navy SEAL Rich Graham’s training facility Full Spectrum Warrior. Full Spectrum Warrior is a firearms training and consulting outfit that offers both public and private classes throughout the year with course topics ranging from leadership courses, to land navigation and even precision rifle and reconnaissance courses. Safariland’s main goal in bringing us out to the FSW facility was to provide a clear understanding of their retention levels, how they work, and what those extra levels of retention can provide the wearer in terms of both personal and firearm security. Today my aim is to pass along that understanding in the hopes that it’ll clear up some of the recent confusion surrounding the “retention leveling system” that many holster companies have started to adopt for their own active retention holsters. In the next article, we’ll talk about why these retention systems are important.

Just like there is no one perfect gun to use as a concealed carry weapon (CCW), there is no one perfect holster for concealed carry. Variables include, but certainly aren’t limited to, body shape, type of clothing, size of the gun, training levels, retention type, and most importantly, the mission. Let’s face it, if you are a C-Suite level executive and you are walking into the office with a drop leg holster, you either work for an awesome company or you live in Detroit. Similarly, an inside the waistband (IWB) holster probably isn’t the best choice for a uniformed officer. Thanks for joining us for another TFB Wheelgun Wednesday, where we cover all topics that revolve around revolvers. Somehow, we seemed to have missed the advent of red dot compatible holsters from Speed Beez, until I stumbled upon Resputin’s Reddit thread, from which he gave us permission to use his photo you see above. Attaching red dot optics to pistols and revolvers isn’t exactly new, but finding holsters for revolvers equipped as such will still yield few results. What’s more, is that Speed Beez even has an option to cover the large red dot optics typically seen on Smith & Wesson’s TRR8 and R8 revolvers, while other options are geared towards the standard and micro-sized red dots.

The Nemesis holster has seen a fair amount of service as part of my old daily carry routine and today DeSantis Gunhide announced its latest adaptation now capable of hosting micro-compact pistols with optics. The #N38 Nemesis holster is great for those who like to carry in a jacket pocket but are worried about it slipping around and moving from its original position.

A couple of months back before SHOT Show 2023 was even a worry in my head I was invited out to Georgia where Safariland hosted a great event at Bill Rogers’ shooting school. This was fitting since Bill Rogers is essentially the father of the modern duty holster and while we were there, we were able to get a firsthand look at the new SafariVault holster, now being officially announced here at SHOT 2023.
