POTD: Rheinmetall’s Squad Support Weapon - SSW40

Today’s Photo of the Day highlights the SSW40, a magazine-fed, shoulder-fired 40 mm grenade launcher designed to deliver increased firepower compared to traditional single-shot systems. Chambered for both 40 mm LV (low velocity) and the newer MV (medium velocity) ammunition family, the platform is intended to bridge the gap between standard underbarrel launchers and heavier crew-served systems.

The SSW40 is a self-loading system, allowing rapid follow-up shots. Its layout and controls are described as being similar to an assault rifle, contributing to familiar handling and improved ergonomics during extended use.

I haven’t shot it, but it does look like at least some explanation needs to be done before using it.

A self-regulating recoil and dampening system manages the increased impulse of MV ammunition, reducing stress on the operator while maintaining controllability.

With MV rounds, the system is capable of engaging targets at extended distances, reportedly up to around 900 meters. The platform can also be paired with fire control systems incorporating a laser rangefinder and ballistic computer, enabling airburst functionality when used with compatible programming units. Note the “LV” and “MV” Aimpoint optics versus the ballistic computer.

This is TFB’s second POTD on the SSW40, and if you compare the Enforce Tac 2026 version seen here, it has evolved quite a bit since 2023.

As a former light infantryman who carried the M203 in Panama, I have to ask just what gap exists between under-barrel launchers and heavy crew served weapons?

Dismounted soldiers are already overloaded. They cannot carry the ammunition to feed anything more than an under-barrel launcher. 40mm grenades have weight. Those must be used judiciously when you are carrying them. If you could simply run back to your vehicle to grab more ammo, then the Mk19 mounted on your vehicle provides the firepower that is needed.

This is an answer looking for a question.
