Springfield Armory has introduced the XD Mod.4 OSP 9mm, the latest iteration of its long-running striker-fired pistol lineup, with an MSRP of $399. The Mod.4 OSP (Optical Sight Pistol) features a factory-milled slide with a plate-based mounting system designed to accommodate a range of popular red dot optics. Plates are available separately through the company’s store.

The pistol uses a polymer frame with aggressive texturing focused on key contact areas, along with an undercut trigger guard and extended beavertail intended to support a higher grip. Slide serrations are positioned at both the front and rear to aid manipulation under various conditions.

Springfield Armory has retained several passive safety features, including a grip safety, a striker status indicator at the rear of the slide, and a tactile loaded chamber indicator.

I noticed it’s easy to miss the grip safety on most of the images, so here’s a detailed look.

The XD Mod.4 OSP is equipped with a flat-faced trigger, a red fiber optic front sight paired with a white dot rear sight, and a Picatinny accessory rail on the dust cover. It ships with a 16-round magazine, with a 10-round version available for restricted markets (same price).

Springfield Armory positions the XD Mod.4 OSP as a budget-friendly, optics-ready option within the current striker-fired handgun market.

"The original XD established a new standard for striker-fired pistols at its launch 25 years ago," said Steve Kramer, Vice President of Marketing for Springfield Armory. "With this new XD Mod.4 OSP, you have a thoroughly modern and capable update of this proven platform that offers an outstanding level of value for the shooter."

The new models are:

  • XD Mod.4 OSP 9mm | XDDG9101B-M4 | 706397003531
  • XD Mod.4 OSP 9mm, Lo-Cap | XDDG9101BLC-M4

At $399, does this change your view of budget striker-fired pistols?

I’m a big fan of the XD line, and I say that as someone who’s owned several Glocks, three CZs, a couple of Walthers, and an Kimber KDS9c, all in 9mm. None of them are still in my possession, save for the Kimber, but my XD mod.2 subcompact will never leave my stable, at least not willingly. And, other than a DAO snubby revolver, the XD is the only handgun I’ll carry AIWB (because of the grip safety). Handguns are items subject to much personal preference, so I understand if the XD line isn’t for you, I’m just glad I found the gun that fits my wants and needs perfectly.
