Faster & Flatter than 6.5 PRC! Federal’s NEW 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak Round

Federal has accomplished something truly clever with this latest introduction. Their “new” cartridge, 6.5 Creedmoor + Peak, has taken the stalwart 6.5 Creedmoor round to new heights by adding 200+ FPS (feet per second) to it, and it is not as simple as dumping more powder in a casing and making a dangerous hot load. By using Peak Alloy technology and casings, along with other premium components housed by Federal, they’ve given 6.5 Creedmoor owners a faster, flatter, and more lethal cartridge on game and steel targets alike.

Federal @ TFB:

NEW Federal 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak

The 6.5 PRC (Precision Rifle Cartridge) was touted as a faster and flatter round than the 6.5 Creedmoor at the time of its introduction - and it has been - until now. Federal flipped the 6.5 game on its head by souping up the 6.5 Creedmoor to be “King of the 6.5” again.

The MSRP pricing for 6.5 Creedmoor + Peak will be similar to standard 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.5 PRC loads, which range from $59.99 to $78.99 for a box of 20 rounds. The new 6.5 Creedmoor + Peak is a high-pressure version of the trusted 6.5 Creedmoor. It has the same external dimensions as a conventional 6.5 Creedmoor and is compatible with existing 6.5 Creedmoor rifles. With a Peak Alloy case, it’s loaded to 80,000 PSI (pounds per square inch), producing muzzle velocities 300 fps faster and beyond 3,000 fps in select loads, while maintaining similar perceived recoil.

A Word from Federal on the NEW 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak Cartridge

Anoka, Minnesota - June 5th, 2026 - “When Federal introduced the 7mm Backcountry cartridge in 2025, we set the wheels in motion that will forever change high-performance rifle ammunition performance,” said Chairman and CEO Jason Vanderbrink. “We are now excited to roll out another Peak Alloy cartridge option. Our 7mm Backcountry and all-new 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak truly unlock unprecedented performance and are ushering in a new era of ammunition. The best part of the 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak is that hunters and target shooters are likely to already own a rifle that can shoot it,” said Vanderbrink.
“We saw the big-picture potential for this technology from the start,” said Mike Holm, Federal’s Director of Centerfire Rifle Ammunition. “It was obvious what Peak Alloy meant for legacy cartridges, and considering the popularity of 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak was the natural place to show the world what it could do. We will first offer 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak in 130-grain Terminal Ascent and a 155-grain Fusion Tipped, with current plans to ship the new cartridge to dealers in August of 2026 and make it available online. Soon to follow will be loads in Gold Medal Sierra Tipped MatchKing, Barnes LRX and Berger Elite Hunter.”

Departing Shots

So, what are your thoughts on the new 6.5 Creedmoor + Peak cartridge? To me, it is nuanced, clever, faster, flatter, and many things yet I struggle with calling it a new cartridge. We did receive some sample ammunition before this announcement and will have a review going Live later today sharing with all of you how that went. So, stay tuned!

As always, let us know all of your thoughts about the new 6.5 Creedmoor + Peak cartridge debuted by Federal in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback and engagement.

300fps faster is a huge deal... I'm really looking forward to 5.56 in the Peak Alloy cases. 77gr bullets going 3000fps out of a 16" barrel - that's compelling.
