At DSEI 2021 in London, we took a look at Accuracy International’s latest pair of rifles. Back in February 2020, Accuracy International announced the introduction of the AX MKIII and the AX 50 ELR but with the global pandemic, this is the first time we’ve had a chance to take a closer look at them in person.

AX50 ELR

The improved AX50 ELR was also on display with its new spring-loaded butt and now compatibility with using AR-15 pattern pistol grips of the user’s choice. The rifle now has the 3 position bolt mounted shroud safety seen on other AI rifles. Like the AX MKIII, the rifle comes as standard with a two-stage trigger with a weight between 3.3 and 4.4lbs. The AX50 ELR has a new 10 round magazine, which has the same dimensions regardless of caliber – .408 CheyTac and .375 CheyTac are also now available options. AI noted that this exact model is currently in service with an undisclosed European military.

What they really need is a magnum bolt face for their short action AT etc, so guys can run 6.5 PRC, 7 saum, 300 wm etc. I could care less about a long action .338 I can put a .223/6.5/.308barrel on. Show me a short action AI AT that I can run a magnum bolt and magnum short action caliber on. Rumor is the AI comp teams are getting them to run 6.5 PRC, but there are no plans to provide them to the market.
