TFB Armorer's Bench: Commentary on The 1915 Spanish Ruby Pistol

Welcome everyone to the  TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb below, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article, I decided to take a break from the more intensive activities to in the shop and commentate on a forgotten yet common World War I sidearm. This is the Spanish-made French-issued 1915 Ruby pistol. The commentary will be pretty cut and dry and you will see the reason. That is why we have a short field strip sprinkled in. Let’s dive right into it folks!

TFB FIELD STRIP: FN FNX-45 Tactical Pistol

This episode of the TFB Field Strip series involves the feature-rich FN FNX-45 Tactical, naturally chambered in .45 ACP. The FNX‘s predecessor, the FNP-45 Tactical was a contender in the Joint Combat Pistol trials of 2005 and 2006 to replace the Beretta M9 service pistol. Even though the JCP program was scrapped, the FNP lived on and was eventually redesigned into the FNX, and the FNX-45 Tactical was released commercially in late 2012. The FNX-45 Tactical stands out from the standard models in that it includes a longer, threaded barrel for suppressor use, as well as suppressor height iron sights and it’s also optics ready from the factory. This field strip comes courtesy of Black Sheep Armory II in Panama City Beach, Florida. Let’s dig in.

TFB FIELD STRIP: Phoenix Arms HP Series Of Pistols

The semi-automatic, HP series of pistols from Phoenix Arms, is one of the better received firearms from the so-called “ring of fire” manufacturers.  Despite the reputation of the Californian companies, the double safetied, single-action HP22 pistols seen in today’s TFB Field Strip, have high marks and reviews from online retailers that offer the Phoenix Arms .22LR pistol. The pistol you see here belongs to a friend that also had high praise for his Phoenix Arms HP22A and carries it on his farm routinely.

TFB FIELD STRIP: Ruger 10/22 Rifles, Carbines and Pistol

The Ruger 10/22 rifle (and pistol) has become the quintessential firearm when it comes to shooting .22 LR and has become one of the most common rimfire guns in North America. There are other semi-automatic .22 LR rifles, but it’s clear that the gun owners and the aftermarket have heavily favored the 10/22. First released in 1964, the Ruger 10/22 made a splash in firearms community that would help hunters, plinkers and countless newcomers learning marksmanship and gun handling for the next 55 years and beyond.

TFB FIELD STRIP: The 1895 Nagant Revolver

The 1895 Nagant revolver is a unique wheelgun that stands out from many designs.  The Nagant revolver is well known as a Russian revolver, however it was actually designed by Emile and Leon Nagant in Belgium in the early 1890’s.  In 1898 the full production began in Russia.

TFB FIELD STRIP: The Mosin-Nagant Rifles

Welcome to another edition of TFB’s Field Strip series.  Today we’ll cover the disassembly process of the famed Mosin-Nagant bolt action rifle.  Since the Mosin-Nagant rifles have hit the surplus market, people seem to either love them or hate them.  Regardless of your feelings on them, the Mosin-Nagant has sealed its place in history, despite not being the best at what it does.

TFB FIELD STRIP: The Colt Woodsman & Huntsman .22LR Pistols

The Colt Woodsman is a semi-automatic .22LR pistol with a ten round detachable box magazine.  Notably, it has a heel magazine release.  The Colt Woodsman was manufactured from 1915 to the mid-1970’s.  The Huntsman was introduced in 1955, and was previously named the Challenger.  The name change was due to a dispute between Colt and Browning over the Challenger name, of which Browning already had a .22 pistol named as such. The Colt Woodsman and Huntsman pistols have the same disassembly process.  If you’ve played with enough .22 pistols, the disassembly directions can vary widely compared to larger caliber semi-auto pistols.  Let’s disassemble the Colt Woodsman on this edition of TFB’s Field Strip series.

TFB FIELD STRIP – The SIG Sauer P-Series Handguns

The SIG Sauer P-Series is one of the most iconic handgun designs created in the last 50 years in my eyes. It was also one of the easier systems to field strip and clean which a number of different handguns also use in today’s market. Once you know how to disassemble the gun, it becomes easy with practice. Here are the disassembly steps.

TFB FIELD STRIP: Mossberg 500

Welcome to the TFB Field Strip series.  We’ll be disassembling a Mossberg 500 in this edition.  The field strip process for the Mossberg 500 is very similar to the 505, 510, 535, 590, 835, as well as the Maverick 88 and 91 models.  The only real significance being whether your model has a captured takedown screw on the barrel assembly, or a removable cap at the end of the magazine.  Before we get started, the four gun safety rules are listed below as a reminder.

TFB FIELD STRIP: Springfield Armory 1911 Mil-Spec - DEFENDERS SERIES

Some of us have a strong love for the Model 1911 whether it came from cinema, history books, or being able to shoot one at an early age. If that affection came at an early age we possibly did not, or currently do not, have a ton of cash to shell out for something high-end. For that very reason, Springfield Armory created the “Defenders Series” which is a 1911 Mil-Spec version at a cheaper price for entry into the platform. It retains all of the quality, fit, and finish that you would expect from Springfield Armory and the 1911 design, but at a lower MSRP for your wallet.

TFB FIELD STRIP: Beretta M9A3 Pistols

The Beretta M9A3 pistols are a tactical or duty variant of the iconic 92 product line designed for personal defense, law enforcement and military applications. Although not an official entrant, the Beretta M9A3 pistols were considered by some to be a contender for the replacement for the M9 pistol issued to U.S. Armed Forces prior to the MHS competition that ended in early 2017. The M9A3 is chambered in 9mm, features an accessory rail and has a threaded barrel. The falling locking block design of the Beretta 92 is considered by some to be more accurate and act as a better suppressor host in contrast to other designs such as Browning’s tilting barrel action.
