Designed in 1898 by John Moses Browning and later modernized and revived in 2014, the Browning A5 shotgun doesn’t just have a solid reputation for being a great waterfowl and upload game hunting gun, but also a rich history as a sport shooting and combat weapon during its early days. I recently had the chance to review a new-production Browning A5 shotgun that had been fitted with XS Sights’ aftermarket photoluminescent vent rib sights. In stark opposition to XS Sights’ tritium-powered night sights, their photoluminescent sights provide end-users with a more cost-effective low-light option that still provides a boost to sight visibility, without the unnecessary ultra low-light capabilities (I don’t think anyone is waterfowl hunting in the dark). Today we’ll talk a bit about the Browning A5 shotgun, how it’s evolved over the years, and also see what the XS Sights Universal Standard Dot Shotgun Vent Rib does to improve the legendary Browning A5 semi-automatic shotgun.

Browning has announced the introduction of a 20 gauge version of its A5 shotgun at SHOT 2024. Notably different from the original Auto 5 series, this model features a humpback receiver that conceals a Kinematic Drive action, aligning with its modern 12 gauge and 16 gauge counterparts.

The new firearms announced by Browning Arms Company for 2023 include four new configurations of the X-Bolt bolt action rifle, fifteen shotguns added to different lines of their shotguns, and three new models of the Buck Mark rimfire pistol. You can find the list of all new Browning 2023 products below. The Browning A5 shotgun (also known as the Auto-5) is an almost legendary design that was first introduced in 1905 and was the first successful semi-automatic shotgun design. The shotgun remained in production unit l 1998 when it was discontinued by Browning. Now, Realtree and Browning have teamed up to update the Auto-5 in the form of the new Browning A5 Shotgun in Realtree MAX-7 camouflage. This new inertia-operated model was the successor of the original long recoil shotgun and builds on the legacy of reliability that its namesake has earned and adds some new features that make it more suitable for today’s modern sportsmen. Now hunters and outdoorsmen can take advantage of everything they love about the new production A5 shotguns but in Realtree’s MAX-7 camouflage.

Browning has published the list of products that are new for 2022. The list includes new versionss of X-Bolt bolt action rifle, BAR Mk3 centerfire and SA-22 rimfire semi-auto rifles, new Cynergy, Maxus II, Silver and A5 shotgun options as well as a couple of new models of the Buck Mark rimfire pistol. Like their sister company Winchester which SHOT Show Special firearms we covered yesterday, Browning has also released a number of limited edition guns for the SHOT Show 2021. These guns differ from their standard, catalog counterparts by unique finishes, furniture and configuration options. In total, there are 106 Browning SHOT Show Special guns. While not a true copy of the original Browning Auto-5 semi-automatic shotgun, the recent A5 shotgun from Browning fills much of the void left behind by the venerable original. Some might contend it’s setting its own unique legacy – something which Browning is obviously pushing towards with the release of their new High-Grade Hunter.

Browning’s recoil operated A5 Shotgun is now available with a super magnum 3.5″ chamber. The company says that it should be able to cycle a wide range of loads. The help mitigate the recoil, an improved recoil pad will be installed.

John Moses Browning’s Auto-5 is back in production, sort of. The newest incarnation of the Auto-5 is the Browning A5. While it has the distinctive Auto-5 “humpback” appearance, inside it is all new. Browning ripped out the nifty long-recoil (recoiling barrel) system and replaced it with a new short-recoil system.
