TFB’s Photo Of The Day is where you can discover the world of firearms through a camera lens. Every day we run a new theme, a bunch of selected pictures together with a short story and credit to the person behind the lens. These images are from the Waiouru Military Camp on the central North Island of New Zealand. All New Zealand Army soldiers complete their initial basic training here.

Photo Of The Day and we’re looking at the 1st Battalion of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment Fire Support Group (FSG) who are out in the tussock sharpening their skills in Waiouru. They trained with multiple weapons, including the M107A1 Anti-Materiel Rifle, Heckler & Koch 40mm Grenade Machine Gun, FGM-148 Javelin Anti-Tank Missile and MAG-58 Sustained Fire Machine Gun.

Photo Of The Day: I guess everyone wants and needs a suppressed Barrett M107A1? If you’ve never seen a suppressor for a .50 caliber rifle, I can tell you that they are huge. If I had the chance to fire any of these systems, I’d probably go for the H&K 40mm Grenade Machine Gun, loaded with high explosive grenades, of course.

Diverse and dedicated, our Reserves are a valuable asset to our Defence Force. They’re well trained, highly skilled and ready to deploy when needed.

Over the last few month the New Zealand Army has begun fielding its new standard issue infantry rifle, the LMT MARS-L. The MARS-L is replacing the F88 Austeyr which has been in service since 1988.

The latest step in the ongoing re-armament of the New Zealand Defence Force has been announced: The SIG Sauer P226 pistols that have served New Zealand servicemen and women since 1992 are to be replaced with new Glock 17 Gen 4 handguns, distributed via an Australian company. The announcement was posted to the New Zealand Defence Force’s website, and is embedded below:
